Meet Tricia Grubbs

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tricia Grubbs. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Tricia, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?

Personally, my self-care regimen varies from day to day. Some days, my self-care habits consist of exercising, eating properly, and staying hydrated. On other days, it can include getting a massage, cleaning, or other activities related to being productive in my personal life. This may be an unpopular opinion; however, taking the day off and having a cheat meal while also lying around the house can be considered self-care. We are all humans who are trying our best with the resources provided to us. My self-care has impacted my effectiveness positively, as I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without practicing what I preach. While attending school to be a licensed massage therapist, I learned that the career expectancy of a massage therapist is only seven years. Currently, I’m in my fourth year, which is over halfway of said career expectancy. I plan on exceeding the average massage therapist’s career expectancy by a long shot. Having set personal boundaries with myself has also helped with my effectiveness, as currently, I only accept three clients a day. I am a firm believer that my last massage needs to be just as good as the first. I am highly dedicated to my work and to helping the individuals that come to me.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a licensed massage therapist with training and certifications in many modalities that include, but are not limited to, neuromuscular massage therapy, Thai yoga massage, and hot stone massage. One of my current short-term goals is to enroll in additional massage therapy education classes to better serve my clientele. For example, I am currently looking forward to taking a course on Ashiatsu massage. Ashiatsu is the art of barefoot massage, where the therapist skillfully uses their feet to massage the client. I am in love with all aspects of massaging. I have clients with a wide range of needs, whether it is to decompress with a hot stone and Swedish massage or to receive a targeted deep tissue massage after being in car accidents. My long-term goal is to expand my business and have employees who work alongside me. I started my business in May of 2023, and I couldn’t have asked for a better career path with better clientele.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were taking constructive criticism, asking questions, and networking. I believe it is critical for individuals attempting to master their craft to seek out criticism. This method has worked tremendously for me to improve my skills. I have asked every client who has received a massage from me to voice their opinion on how I can make the massage better. Utilizing this feedback has taught me very important skills in my craft. Each client prefers different pressure, temperature, and/or technique. Providing a phenomenal experience is very important to me.

The month before I started my business, I became acquainted with an accountant who was willing to trade professional services. I supplied her with a one-hour massage, and in return, she answered all the business questions that I had for one hour. This exchange was invaluable in helping me set up my business successfully.

Every space I have been in, I have networked. Some people I have networked with are other massage therapists who do different modalities than I do. I have also networked with chiropractors, gym owners, personal trainers, and nutritionists. Word-of-mouth referrals are the best way in my industry to market, and I would not be where I am today without this skill. Building these connections has been crucial for my professional growth and the success of my business.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

When I was 16 years old, I was adopted by a lovely lady named Marianne. Marianne is the person who has given me the most direction and guidance in my life. Without her, I don’t believe I would be doing massage therapy today. She is the one who recommended that I attempt massage school. I knew the traditional collegiate route was not for me because, right out of high school, I did not feel passionate about any potential career or profession. Marianne taught me that things in life aren’t handed to us; however, hard work and dedication pay off. With this motivation, I worked multiple fast food jobs while attending trade school to start paying off my education.
