Meet Savannah Simerly

We were lucky to catch up with Savannah Simerly recently and have shared our conversation below.

Savannah , first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

First of all, Imposter Syndrome happens to everyone; even the most seasoned professionals. Realizing that fact helps. Secondly: taking a break from social media. As creatives, we follow a plethora of other talented creatives and most of us are on social media daily, which can be overwhelming. It can easily cause us to compare our work to others and therefore start questioning our own work. Take a break, get inspiration from other sources, and write down what comes to mind. That way you stay true to yourself and your style.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a photographer in North Carolina who specializes in creative portraiture. I like the fact that because my work is straight out of my imagination, it sets me apart from other photographers. My images are unique, quirky, out-of-the-box, and often include elements of nature. I work with a lot of models for my shoots. However, it is my aim for the general public to book my creative shoots. Because I believe everyone is photogenic and should have unique images for themselves.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Having the drive, motivation, and determination to power through and keep going is very important. It is not easy in this industry. But it is worth it. Knowing your camera inside out is essential. If you don’t know something, look it up or ask. And also lighting. Know how to work with different lighting situations and you’ll be golden. Just shoot shoot shoot and experiment. Practice makes perfect.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Fellow photographer that Ive networked with over the years have been super helpful. When you create a community of like minded individuals, every one is building up, challenging, and giving advice to one another.
