Meet Lorena Ubillus

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lorena Ubillus a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Lorena , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Developing my confidence and self-esteem has been a journey of continuous effort and growth. Unlike some, I wasn’t naturally endowed with confidence; it’s a skill I’ve diligently honed day by day. I firmly believe in its importance, both personally and professionally. Failures have been pivotal in this process, each one revealing areas for improvement and ultimately making me more resilient. Through meditation and cultivating a positive mindset, I’ve nurtured these qualities further. Despite battling social anxiety in my youth and the constant worry of others’ perceptions, I’ve learned to use even negative feedback as fuel for personal growth or to reinforce my newfound sense of self-assurance.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a first-generation Peruvian American woman living in Los Angeles, and I founded Sunu Santo, a luxury swimwear brand that celebrates the artistry, community, and vibrant richness of South American and Latino cultures. Previously, I worked in the aerospace industry, but after a recent layoff, I seized the opportunity to devote myself entirely to my passion. Sunu Santo is more than just a swimwear line; it’s a tribute to the enchanting landscapes, diverse traditions, and passionate spirit of South America, reflecting my deep connection to my roots. My hope is to be able to showcase the beautiful talent that is found in Latin countries and create a sense of community within our brand that inspires young women of any background to continuously strive to find their passion and purpose which resonates through what we create and the story we tell here at Sunu Santo. I am thrilled to announce that our new collection will be launching on July 16th, 2024. This collection embodies the essence of our brand and represents a fusion of elegance, heritage, and contemporary style.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey, three qualities have been most impactful: communication, understanding various areas of business, and networking. Effective communication has been crucial in articulating my vision and building strong relationships. Gaining a deep understanding of business operations has allowed me to navigate challenges and make informed decisions. Networking has connected me with invaluable resources and opportunities.

For those starting their journey, my advice is to immerse yourself in learning. Read extensively in areas where you feel less confident, find podcasts that captivate you, and make a habit of learning something new every day. Knowledge is powerful, and even small, daily insights accumulate and make a significant difference over time. Stay curious and proactive in expanding your understanding and skills.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am always on the lookout for interesting and creative people to collaborate with. Currently, I am especially eager to partner with a women’s jewelry company for my upcoming collections, as I believe that the fusion of swimwear and elegant jewelry could create something truly captivating. I am also excited to collaborate with models, photographers, and stylists who share a passion for artistry and storytelling. Additionally, I have a deep appreciation for artisans and those who craft unique, handmade goods. If you are interested in collaborating, please reach out to me at [email protected]. Let’s create something beautiful together!
