Meet Heather Ferrato

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Heather Ferrato. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Heather below.

Hi Heather, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I get my work ethic from my parents. To give you a little backstory my sister and I (yes, I am a twin) had a rough start. We were born 2 months early and only weighed 3 lbs each. I was very sick and went through many life saving surgeries. We ultimately ended up being transferred to different hospitals due to myself needing a more skilled NICU. My parents both worked full time and went back and forth (day and night) to two different hospitals for a total 6 months until we finally made it home. My mom and dad knew that times would be tough and they would need to work harder than ever to pay medical bills. My dad took another job for more money, unfortunately he had to travel out of state a lot. Throughout my life they have worked tirelessly to always provide for us. They never complained or showed how tired they were. Their work ethic and drive is something I have always wanted to emulate and strive for.
Fast forward to today, this has allowed me to achieve not only my goals professionally, but personally as well. With every client that comes into my treatment room, my hard work ethic and dedication is shown by the quality of services and attention to detail, something I take great pride in.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I have been a licensed esthetician for 18 years. I truly love what I do. Having the knowledge and skill to be able to help my clients with their skincare concerns is what makes me so happy and what I thrive on. Whether it’s anti-aging, acne, hyperpigmentation, rosacea and anything in between, it’s my mission is to help improve clients skin health. It’s important to create an individual treatment plan my clients can easily follow which will allow for them to achieve a healthy and balanced skin barrier. I enjoy educating clients on at home skincare routines and on being consistent with it. Correcting skincare concerns can be a marathon and not a sprint, and setting realistic expectations along with using pharmaceutical grade skincare, and making monthly facial appointments will help my clients see results. Aside from addressing skincare concerns, I have to mention that facials are so relaxing!
Other services that I offer are chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning nanoneedling, lash lifts and waxing just to name a few.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The one thing I have learned being an esthetician of 18 years is the ever changing modalities and the need for continuing education that is required to stay on top of the latest treatments and products. It truly is never ending and I enjoy learning and growing in this profession. Being able to bring that knowledge to my clients is invaluable.
Knowing how to listen and understanding what your clients want to achieve will help to create a clear treatment plan that will help them get results. Taking notes and tracking their progress is a great way to see how far they have come. Plus it’s always fun to see!
Along with keeping up with continuing education, and listening to your clients needs, it’s important to relax and enjoy! Having confidence to connect with your clients doesn’t always happen when you are starting out, but the more you grow and learn, your clients will connect with you and lifelong relationships will happen.
My advice to anyone who is starting a career as an esthetician, is to enter in this field with the goal to help people. At the end of the day make them feel more relaxed than when they came in. Don’t stress if you don’t know everything right away, that’s why knowledge in this field is continuing. You will get there! Have confidence in yourself and know you are making a difference in someone’s life.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?

When starting out in this profession, you will soon learn what your strengths and weaknesses are. I have learned to not let your weaknesses deter you from growing. It’s so easy to focus on our strengths because that’s where we feel most comfortable and confident. However, if you work on areas that you’re weak in it may turn into one of your strengths. (Who doesn’t love that?)
Starting out my career in esthetics school, I soon found my strength was connecting to clients and understanding their goals for their skin. However, in esthetics school quickly found out I was not that strong in waxing. (school really didn’t focus on waxing)I wanted to be confident and knowledgeable in this area. I began practicing and taking classes to learn more about waxing techniques and aftercare. Now fast forward, this is an area I am confident and comfortable in. As this profession continues to grow, there will be areas we are not confident/knowledgeable in but that’s when you step out of your comfort zone and start learning and growing. Plus it always feels good to know you’re not only benefiting yourself but your clients as well.
