Meet Julie Barber

We recently connected with Julie Barber and have shared our conversation below.

Julie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

For 15 years I worked in Radiology, and don’t get me wrong, I did love that career! But when I adopted an unruly dog in 2015 I quickly realized I needed help…STAT! I struggled to find someone who could actually help me Group classes and private lessons turned out to be a waste of money overall. And the saying goes….if you want something done right you need to do it yourself. And that’s what I did. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with dog training and behavior and before I knew it I was helping others…and getting RESULTS! I knew what it felt like to waste money on training that fell apart, so I vowed never to make my clients feel that way. I’ve always been realistic and results driven…and am so motivated to continue to help dog owners who are struggling like I once did. THAT is my purpose. Thanks to my shelter dog….Riggins.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

Long story short we take family dogs in for 3-8 weeks and give them back fully trained on and off leash. We focus on OWNERS and their goals with their dog, tailoring our program to specific needs. We take puppies starting at 5 months old just needing to learn manners but we also take human and dog aggressive cases too. We teach leash manners, recall (come), stay (sit, down and place) as well as how to STOP unwanted behaviors like barking, digging, jumping, nipping, destruction, and separation anxiety. We properly socialize the dogs as well as take them on fun pack hikes through our 14 acre wooded property. At the end of the program we transfer everything over to their owners in a hands on, comprehensive session after they’ve come prepared reading our go home packet and watching videos with their dog as the star.

The most exciting part about this is seeing owners walk their dog nicely for the first time without being pulled, dragged or jumped on, and the looks on their faces and just total joy at that session.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

First, I didn’t intimidation stop me from starting. I wasn’t born knowing how to train a dog, I just started one day. And got better day after day. Just GO for it.

Second….having a mentor I really admire, trust and look to for advice. Things will come up along the way and I really needed that support.

Third, my drive. My drive was so strong to be successful in this industry that I never ever gave up or let any setback stand in my way.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

Jim Rohn: The Art of Exceptional Living

I also listened to a speech he made in 1983 that is on Youtube that changed my life the moment I heard it. Only YOU have the power to change your life, no one is going to do it for you. If you don’t change, nothing changes.
