We were lucky to catch up with Emma Ludlum recently and have shared our conversation below.
Emma, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
The truth is that I didn’t avoid burnout, but what I do now to avoid burnout is exactly what I learned from crashing into it face first. The two things I keep in mind with regards to burnout is maintaining my nutrition and cleansing my mind. From my perspective, maintaining a healthy diet is a baseline for well-being. Not only is it an act of self-love to care for what goes into your body, but it also allows you to have a good foundation for health, vitality, energy and well-being.
The type of nutrition I studied was functional nutrition, where you understand the function of each organ in the body and how food can support those organs to eradicate root causes of symptoms. However, what I developed over the years was my ability to eat intuitively. It is helpful to understand the body, how it functions and all the diet options that are out there, and what was always most effective for me was to listen to how my body felt after what I ate. Typically people are really good at this when they are allergic to something because it’s pretty obvious and symptoms are overwhelming. However, with the softer, quieter signals from the body, people tend to gloss over them, but the key to nutritional well-being is in these softer signals. Food sensitivities can have symptoms that manifest up to 14 days later, vs. an allergy, where symptoms manifest immediately. This means that the persistent headache you have may be because of the coconut milk you have in your coffee every morning. The fatigue you have may be from the bell pepper you eat twice a week. Or maybe the mood swings you experience and fights with your partner happen at the same time after you eat a lot of sugar? Learning to develop the skill of listening to the body and how it responds to the foods it comes into contact with is crucial because only you will know. It’s a powerful reminder that we all have the power within us to heal. We don’t always need to go to external help or experts. I find this empowering because this means we all have the ability to heal, be well and consequently be happy too.
The other key to the puzzle of burnout that I discovered was my own mind. While nutrition is crucial to have a baseline for the body and to fight stress, having my mind be my best friend has been a game changer for my overall stress levels in life. In other words, you can have the most perfect diet, but if you still have negative views about yourself and the world, the stress from the negativity will likely outweigh the benefits of great nutrition.
What I mean by this is using modalities for change work in the mind to erase limiting beliefs I have about myself, my abilities and the world has been the key to shifting me from feeling stuck and overwhelmed to believing in myself and seeing the good I do in the world. It has been a night and day shift in my reality, how I move through the world and consequently how well and happy I feel. There are many changework modalities out there, and the ones that I have taken part in are Hypnotherapy, Reiki, Energy Healing, EMDR, Timeline Therapy and NLP. Essentially these modalities helped me see the root of my subconscious patterns that I unknowingly took on in childhood and eradicated the root of those patterns by updating the narrative I tell myself about my capabilities and own worth. I went from believing I wasn’t valuable and not doing enough to believing in myself and knowing that I am exactly where I need to be.
This work had such an incredible impact on my life that I have shifted my career entirely and now support people with hypnotherapy and energy healing. I feel honored that I have a front row seat to people’s transformations of helping people rediscover how awesome, successful and lovable they truly are. When they remember these truths, the magic really starts to unfold because they believe in themselves again.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I specialize in the subconscious mind through hypnotherapy and energy healing. I personally believe that we all have the ability to heal and that it is a shame so many people suffer when they don’t have to. From my perspective empowerment is the ability to transcend your perceived limitations, and this is what I help people do, so that they can go from feeling stuck and overwhelmed to unstoppable. In other words, I help them understand subconsciously what is driving their behaviors. Why do they decide to start a diet and then wake up late at night in the fridge, not even remembering how they got there and what they were looking for? Or why do they constantly feel like they’re not doing enough and burnt out? Do you believe you’re not enough? Perhaps you grew up in a household where you always heard things like “why can’t you be more like your brother?” Do you now constantly compare yourself to others and seek approval from the external world? It’s usually not enough for folks to have a conscious awareness of their patterns, it really takes changework to mentally and energetically shift these patterns, before the individual can experience true and lasting change. What happens when someone goes from thinking they’re not good enough to thinking they are deserving and more than enough? In my experience, their relationships get better, their self-care gets better, their fears subside, their careers explode, and the list goes on. Working with the mind at the subconscious level has such a large impact on all categories of life, and the experience can be fun, enjoyable, quick and long lasting.
I work with clients in groups through my retreats and my signature Hypnosis for Happiness events that I do throughout the country. I also work individually with clients through my private practice online or in person in the San Francisco Bay Area. When I’m not having fun with clients, you can find me having fun as a hip hop and Bachata dancer, cooking, playing tennis and hiking with my puppy, Nugget.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The number one area of knowledge that has helped me in my journey is my insatiable curiosity for self-growth. I truly believe that working on yourself first and foremost, will open you up to opportunities bigger than your imagination and will allow you to be ready to make the most of and fully enjoy those opportunities when they arrive. I have always loved learning and my most rapid transformation has been in recent years when I’ve gone down the self-growth path. For example, if you’re deciding to do a course on excel because you need it for your job or a weekend transformation retreat to boost your confidence, go for the retreat or at least do it first. Chances are you are more than smart enough to figure out the excel on your own and even if you take both of them, you’ll breeze through the excel course if you have more confidence and believe you can learn it.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I love working with people who are motivated, caring individuals who have simply forgotten how awesome they truly are along the way. I find that these folks tend to have their career figured out and need support in other areas of life such as emotional health and relationships, or are trying to figure out how their demanding career fits into their life that they already have figured out. The combination of helping people maintain a well-balanced life usually stems from them thinking they are good enough to either set boundaries with their career or improve their self-worth so that they can build the relationships to match the blossomed career they are set to have. In my opinion, you don’t have to have one or the other, you can have it all AND live a less stressful life. The key is believing that you can and believing in yourself.
As I grow my practice, I am looking for folks who would like to co-host retreats and a business mentor who could help me with expanding my group offerings. I plan to fold in more public speaking and provide workshops to a wider international audience in the coming year, so anyone with those skill sets, I would love to partner with, so I can help more people!
