We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Cass Naumann. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Cass below.
Dr. Cass, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
It evolved over time.
I was born a naturally gifted musician and highly sensitive person. And I was fascinated with trees, flowers, and medicine books around the house. And our family spent a lot of time at the church. I played piano and organ for services and was an acolyte allthewhile finding much solace in a relationship with Spirit. I majored in Music at The University of Texas at Austin and began going to yoga classes at 19 which opened up a whole new avenue of life experience. I took classes on world religions and many years later started a MARS degree- Masters of Arts in relgious studies.
Throughout this time I worked alongside my best friend, George Reiff, a renowned music producer, who happened to also be a Qigong master and lover of alternative medicine. We talked frequently during recording, mixing, mastering sessions of vibrational healing. frequency, light and sound, and energy medicine. He introduced me to worlds I never knew existed. So when after the birth of my second son I was severely anemic, he suggested I go to receive acupuncture and herbal medicine for the first time. Fate had it that I saw Dr. William Morris, who was at that time Dean, president of the school. He was also a musician, a mystic, and treated me in a way that involved the story of my pregnancy, child birth, and the violence that led to my divorce- all stored in my blood. The way that our sessions went incorporated every aspect of interest I had ever studied- chakras, chanting, story, herbal medicine, quantum biology, meridian pathways that affected mind body spirit and heart.
After a few sessions and the profound healing I was experiencing, especially how empowered I felt to heal myself, I decided to audit a few classes and quit my jobs: singing jazz at night, teaching at a private music school during the day and yoga classes at studios around Austin- to go back to grad school and get my masters, and as George was passing of cancer, continue on to get my doctorate degree in integrative medicine with Dr. Morris as one of my mentors and advisors.
With him I learned Shen-Hammer pulse diagnosis, Shang Han Sun herbal medicine, became a Reiki master/teacher under his transmissions, dove deep into leadership and ethics, and was a TA for the doctoral pulse seminars. And later adjunct faculty myself teaching medical Qigong in the doctoral program.
During the process of George’s passing I also encountered psychedelic and plant medicines for the first time for end of life care and care giver grief. I was able to study with a number of indigenous wisdom keepers and learn from their traditions.
I began sitting in weeklong silent meditation retreats a few times a year, spending more and more time in monasteries and with spiritual teachers and mentors; and at some point I also encountered Integral Theory which gave me a scaffolding for emotional development, shadow work, and spiritual awakening across multiple traditions.
Then another road of destiny took a turn to apply all of this to Daoist studies, I fully immersed myself in this path. It again folded all of the East Asian medicine practices together with a spiritual heart. And at present I am learning to integrate all of this wisdom into ways I can be of service.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My passionate are of interest right now is consciousness.
My ideal clients are those asking the big questions- defining or re-defining their values and purpose in life.
And then seeking ways in which we can give back to our family, community, and planet in a metta way.
I naturally see patterns and how to expand or evolve them- like mandala or kaleidoscopes…
I work a lot in the realm of integration- post psychedelic or plant medicine ceremony. Those coming off longer silent retreats and times of seclusion. And those in the midst of existential crisis.. Where we are meaning making and taking these peak/valley experiences and learning how to use what we’ve been shown to bring about more fulfillment, more joy, more acceptance, gratitude, reciprocity, generosity, and more beauty to life. How do we apply these principles and insights into our lives in practical ways?
I am enjoying creating project based work; courses, intensives, workshops, retreats: where we can dive deeper in intimate small groups and look at all aspects of the self- growing up emotionally, waking up spiritually, and how we are showing up in the world.
My next international retreat is in Cork,Ireland.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience- perseverance-resiliency
Excellence (not perfectionism.)
Spirituality- connection to the divine. Source. Great Mystery. Dao.
I worked for a few years as an Integral Medicine Doctor at a psychiatry practice. After a year there I noticed a 1:1 correlation between joy and spirituality. I would ask “what brings you joy?” And regardless of the answer ( by far the most common was time in nature and connection with others) the answer was yes to “Do you have a spiritual practice?)
My advise is self compassion, gentleness, and kindness towards ourselves.
Having long term goals that you are working towards- and allowing that vision and dream to change evolve along the way.
To trade with other gifted practitioners to help work through and integrate trauma and old stories and patterns that block us from deeper growth and expansion.
Keeping life as simple as possible. So that energy is towards health and wellbeing.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I love the idea of collaboration at this time.
Guest teaching, retreats, workshops, intensives,
I have been adjunct faculty at 2 universities teaching Medical Qigong, and Chinese Medicine.
My doctoral treatise is on Qigong and effects of Vibrational Healing…
I teach qigong, yoga, meditation, breathwork… and also creative writing, energy work practices, releasing emotions though sound and movement…as my undergraduate degree in music composition from The University of Texas – I play piano and sing jazz, and put out a record ages ago. So using gongs, bowls, harmonium, keyboards, tuning forks, etc while singing mantras and medicine songs- comes naturally in my sessions I’ve included a Soundcloud link to some of my work.
I would love to guest teach or co-facilitate with anyone already established- anywhere in the world.
I am calling in more travel this next 5-10 years!
I also have a vast array of ideas that I need someone to help me take that last 10 % to the finish line.
I have a card deck, most of 2 books finished, online courses galore.
If anyone reading this has the skills I’m lacking to get these completed- the content is complete, Its the recording, packaging, marketing, publishing I welcome assistance with.
Any way that the wisdom traditions I have spent my life learning the ways of, any way that what I carry can be of benefit to others or meet the intesection of another path, I’m interested in what evolves there.
Authenticity, kindness, compassion, excellence, elegance, growth- these are cornerstones to me.
