We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tawnie Breaux. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tawnie below.
Tawnie, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Confidence is something you build over time, just like any other skill. It starts with your relationship with yourself and learning to trust your instincts. Stepping into new situations and thinking, “I got this,” you’re already on the right path. Every experience—whether you succeed or stumble—adds to your confidence. Having friends and family to cheer you on is amazing, but it’s also crucial to be your own biggest cheerleader. At the end of the day, it’s all about trusting yourself and celebrating the little wins along the way.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, the three essential qualities and skills that stand out are resilience, communication skills, and strategic thinking.
Resilience: Staying strong and focused through the ups and downs of a career requires a solid ability to bounce back from setbacks. I tend to take things personally, so there are a lot of daily pep talks over here. Hitting my goals was very important, and I was determined to succeed in each job. As I moved up in my career, my resilience was nurtured by watching and learning from those around me.
Communication Skills: Effective communication is crucial in building business relationships and conveying your ideas clearly. I learned to simplify complex processes and make big ideas granular. It’s like seeing the big picture AND all the details simultaneously. Early in my journey, I focused on active listening and public speaking to enhance this skill.
Strategic Thinking: Developing a strategic mindset is a game changer. Defining your goals, setting reasonable actions to get there, and tracking your progress will help you achieve excellent results every time. I recommend studying your industry (even though you know it). There is always more to learn. Commit yourself to reading one industry book a month and find a mentor talk with quarterly.
Here’s some advice for the younger readers.
Embrace Life-Long Learning: This is my favorite!!! Stay curious and invest time in learning new skills. Heck, just learn new anything: communication, negotiation, CHatGPT, AI, IG. Take time to learn as much as possible about yourself and what makes you joyful. We are much more productive when we are in a learning mode, and sharing new knowledge with others can be part of the joy.
Seek Mentorship: I mentioned this already, but it’s SO good. Find mentors who can provide guidance, share their experiences, and offer constructive feedback. It might seem uncomfortable initially, but remember, people love sharing knowledge; their insights can be invaluable in your growth.
The last tip is to Build a Strong Network. This is your tribe, activley seek out people you can learn from. The old saying “surround yourself with smart people” and “you are the average of the five people you hang around” is true. There are many groups in Houston, from your local Chamber of Commerce to UPWARD Women Houston, where you can start connecting with others in your community. The best thing about networking is that it can lead to new friends, collaborations, and opportunities.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
One book that has played a significant role in my development is “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz. This book offers powerful life lessons through its four principles: be impeccable with your word, don’t take anything personally, don’t make assumptions, and always do your best. Being impeccable with my word has taught me to communicate with integrity and honesty. Learning not to take things personally has helped me stay grounded and less reactive to others’ opinions. Avoiding assumptions has improved my clarity in communication, and striving to always do my best has encouraged consistent effort and growth. These nuggets of wisdom have been transformative, helping me build a mindset of clarity, resilience, and authenticity.
