We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Adrianne Ortega. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Adrianne below.
Adrianne, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I believe I have learned to be resilient from being a first generation Mexican American. My late father taught me there was nothing I could not manage to get through and conquer. He showed me that I could focus and do my best to meet my goals both professionally and personally.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a Reproductive Acupuncturist/ Herbalist and business owner of Alma Acupuncture in San Antonio, Texas. I provide support to people that have a womb both in person and virtually. I support people with the help of Traditional Chinese Medicine including acupuncture and herbs to help them with most reproductive issues. This often includes: fertility, irregular menstruation, heavy menstruation, and/or painful menstruation. Basically, I help people with any issue they may have with their menstruation until menopause in person or virtually.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I feel that having fortitude, resilience and confidence in my self has helped me achieve my goals of being a business owner. Even when life and/ or business has become challenging I am able to continue to move forward because I know that I have been able to find the fortitude to get through all of the tough times before. I am well aware I will be able to be accomplish my goals – even when it is an “uphill climb.”
If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
I had a local nonprofit reach out to me seeking my services in teaching a class. This class they were asking me to teach is a class I have taught before. The director was clearly shocked when I gave her the general cost of my services as an instructor for a 2.5 hour class by their exaggerated facial expressions. After the video call I reflected and then I created an email telling them that I was not the best candidate because they were clearly not valuing me. Regrettably, interactions like these are why so many Latinas are underpaid at $.54 to the dollar compared to their Caucasian counterparts – the least paid among all BIPOC women. This experience has further taught me that I need to continue standing up to injustices like this one.
