We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Uncle Joe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Uncle, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my parents. Both my parents worked my whole life, but my father definitely instilled hard work into me. As a child I saw my dad get up everyday at 5am, drive 30-40 mins to work, come home and take me to whatever sport I was playing during that season. I never saw him call out or take sick day. He was also the Pastor of our church, so while juggling work and my extracurricular activities, he still ran weekly bible study and Sunday service. My father truly was the definition of no days off. I’ve tried to model myself the same way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started my business in 2018. As a groomsmen at one of my best friends wedding, a friend asked what I was doing with my communication/sports media career. As a graduate from American International College, everyone knew me from doing play by play and color commentary for our mens & women’s basketball team and football team. At that time I had started to slowly transition into sports betting. It was at that moment he said “so call yourself The Black Bookie” And since then I never looked backed. My goal has always been to inform sports bettors on the best way to be profitable long term. Sports betting is a billion dollar industry and is only growing with its legalization. Sports knowledge is only a small piece of being successful at sports betting. Money management and discipline are the ultimate keys.
What sets me apart from a lot of other sports bettors on social media is our transparency. A large portion lie about wins, losses, odds they got the play at, placing actual bets, amount wagered etc… One of our main slogans is “Win Together Lose Together.” I never give out a play for someone to take that I don’t have my hard earned money on. How could I tell someone to trust me on a play if I don’t take it myself? Another part about being honest and actually explaining how sports betting works is to explain you’re going to lose! A lot of handicappers (someone who analyzes sporting events to find an edge) try to sell a dream that they hit 70-80% which is simply impossible.
I am most proud of our growth. Our podcast, The SnoozeYouLose Podcast numbers have increased every year. We’ve had multiple partners and sponsors including an international partner BetStamp. Because of my background, I love that our platform still offers sports information and insight for every day sports topics for those who don’t sports bet.
If you follow me you’ll get humor, information, wins and losses.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One of the biggest qualities that were helpful along my journey was patience. A lot of people expect overnight success in business and in sports betting. Before I started investing oppose to gambling, I was losing consistently! When I took time to learn trends, strategy, line shopping and how to read the lines that Vegas sets, I was able to become more successful. Even with my podcast. I recorded for two years before I ever made a dollar. Patience is key for progress. Success can happen at different paces for everyone, but you have to be willing to wait your turn.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Collaborating is always a useful tool for people to get their name and business in front of a new audience. Other sports bettors or sports podcast I would love to collaborate with in the future.
