Meet Jaspal Singh

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jaspal Singh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jaspal, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Being the Only One in the Room: My Journey to Success and Effectiveness
This question resonates deeply with me because I’ve faced this challenge countless times, even to this day. When I declared my intention to become my own boss, not only was my knowledge underestimated, but my identity as an individual was also scrutinized and belittled. Entering the arena I’m in now, I often find myself as a minority, standing out in rooms filled with peers and superiors. It was a genuine struggle, transitioning from feeling inadequately informed to being surrounded by people who mirrored my own insecurities. This was a significant blow to my confidence.

Marketing oneself is crucial in the business world, especially as a company owner. To be effective, we must present ourselves compellingly. Growing one’s own brand or name requires humility and effort. Faced with this reality, I had to choose between feeling intimidated or becoming a commanding presence. A business owner leads, but a successful business owner leads with knowledge and experience.

To overcome my fears, I made it my mission to be the unique voice in these rooms. I began studying Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). Delving deeply into NLP, I used it to better understand myself and others. This process was akin to hitting the reset button, but it proved to be invaluable. It has been a transformative experience, significantly impacting both my personal and professional life, and has been a key driver of my success.

By embracing these challenges and continuously seeking self-improvement, I’ve learned to be effective and successful, even when I’m the only one in the room who looks like me. This journey has taught me resilience, self-awareness, and the importance of leading with both confidence and expertise.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The Three Most Impactful Qualities in My Journey
Reflecting on my journey, there are three key qualities that have been most impactful: having great intent, structuring and organizing everything you do, and actively listening. These elements have guided me through countless challenges and opportunities. For those of you starting out, here’s how you can develop and improve these essential skills in a way that’s relatable and actionable.

1. Master the Ability to Have Great Intent
Think of great intent as your internal compass. It’s about having a clear and positive purpose behind everything you do. When your intentions are good, you attract the right opportunities and align your actions with your values and goals.

How to Develop Great Intent:

Set Clear Goals: Take a moment to think about what you really want to achieve. Write it down. What’s your dream job? What impact do you want to have? This clarity will drive your actions.
Stay Positive: Life throws curveballs, but your mindset determines how you handle them. Stay optimistic, and you’ll find solutions more easily.
Be Authentic: Be true to yourself. When you align your actions with your values, you build trust and attract people and opportunities that resonate with you.
2. Structure and Organize Everything You Do
Imagine trying to build a house without a blueprint. It’s chaotic and inefficient. The same goes for your life and career. Structure and organization help you manage tasks, prioritize effectively, and stay on track with your goals.

How to Get Organized:

Plan Your Day: Use a planner or digital calendar. List out your tasks and prioritize them. What’s urgent? What’s important? This will help you stay focused and productive.
Create Systems: Find what works for you. Maybe it’s a morning routine to kickstart your day or a specific way to handle emails. Systems make life simpler.
Regular Check-Ins: Set aside time each week to review your progress. Are your systems working? Do you need to adjust your plan? This keeps you on course.
3. Listen to Comprehend, Not Just to Respond
Active listening can be a game-changer. It’s more than just hearing words; it’s about understanding the message behind them. This skill helps you make better decisions, build stronger relationships, and learn from every interaction.

How to Improve Your Listening Skills:

Practice Empathy: Try to put yourself in the other person’s shoes. What are they really saying? This helps you connect and understand better.
Ask Questions: Don’t just nod along. Ask questions that show you’re engaged and want to understand more deeply.
Take Your Time: Pause before you respond. Reflect on what’s been said and formulate your thoughts. This shows respect and helps you provide more thoughtful responses.
Learn from Everything
If I could stress one thing above all else, it’s the importance of learning from every experience. In business and life, every day presents new lessons. There’s no pride in pretending to know everything. Embrace each moment as an opportunity to grow.

How to Learn from Everything:

Stay Curious: Approach every situation with a mindset of curiosity. What can you learn from this? How can this experience make you better?
Reflect Often: Take time at the end of each day to reflect. What went well? What didn’t? What can you improve for next time?
Seek Feedback: Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from others. Listen openly and use it to improve. Remember, negativity can’t exist if you’ve learned from it.
Final Thoughts
These three qualities—great intent, structured organization, and active listening—have been instrumental in my journey. They’ve helped me navigate the complexities of multiple businesses, make informed decisions, and grow both personally and professionally.

For those of you starting out, I encourage you to embrace these qualities. Set your intentions clearly, organize your efforts meticulously, and listen to understand. Treat every experience as a learning opportunity, and you’ll be well-equipped to handle the challenges and seize the opportunities that come your way. You’ve got this!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

Who Has Been Most Helpful in My Journey?
When it comes to overcoming challenges and developing essential skills, qualities, or knowledge for success, it’s not about who has helped me but rather what has shaped me. Life lessons have been the most influential force in my life.

The Power of Life Lessons
My hardships in life weren’t a curse; they were blessings in disguise. Each adversity I faced molded my resilience and taught me invaluable lessons. I was counted out early in life, facing tremendous adversity. From being shot and losing family and friends to being incarcerated, I was statistically not supposed to be where I am today. But here I am, grateful and humble.

Growing up, I had a praying mother who believed in tough love. She understood that sometimes, the best way to learn is through experience. She let me feel the consequences of my actions, which taught me survival skills and shaped the individual I am today. These experiences instilled in me a resilience that has been my backbone in every endeavor.

To think, I started out with only a 9th-grade education. Now, I have college degrees and multiple businesses. This journey from limited education to academic and entrepreneurial success is a testament to the power of life lessons and the resilience they build.

Embracing Uniqueness and Resilience
Often, I found myself being the only one in the room who looked or thought like me. Initially, this was intimidating, but I learned to use it to my advantage. Being different opened up paths I never thought possible. Failure is just a word; it only has power if you let it stop you. You can fall a thousand times, but each time you learn, you grow stronger. As long as you have breath, keep striving and fighting. Life lessons might not make sense today, but everything happening around you is for a reason. Embrace it.

Key Lessons from Life
Resilience is Key: Every hardship taught me to be resilient. This resilience is invaluable in the business world, where challenges are constant.
Survival Skills: From a young age, I learned to navigate life’s challenges independently. This has been crucial in my entrepreneurial journey.
Adaptability: Life’s unpredictability has made me adaptable. In business, being able to pivot and adjust is crucial for success.
Humility and Gratitude: Despite my achievements, I remain humble and grateful. These qualities keep me grounded and focused on continuous improvement.
Practical Advice for Your Journey
For those of you starting out, here’s how you can harness these lessons:

Embrace Your Challenges: Each challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Don’t shy away from them; face them head-on. When I faced hardships, I viewed them as learning experiences rather than setbacks.

Actionable Tip: When facing a challenge, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” This mindset shift can transform obstacles into opportunities.
Be Unique: Your unique perspective is your strength. Use it to carve out your path and create opportunities. Being the only one in the room who thinks or looks like you can be an advantage.

Actionable Tip: Leverage your unique experiences and viewpoints to offer fresh insights and innovative solutions.
Never Stop Learning: Life is the best teacher. Learn from every experience, and use those lessons to drive your success. I’ve learned that staying curious and open-minded is vital for growth.

Actionable Tip: Keep a journal of your daily experiences and reflect on what you’ve learned. This practice can help you continuously grow and adapt.
Turning Obstacles into Fuel
Use your pain, hurt, depression, and negativity as fuel. Strategize and use these experiences to run circles around everything that tries to stop you. Once you hit rock bottom, there’s nowhere to go but up. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall; as long as growth is the mission, you will be okay.

How to Use Adversity as Fuel:

Channel Your Emotions: Let your emotions drive you forward. Turn pain into motivation, hurt into determination, and depression into a relentless pursuit of success.
Strategize: Use your experiences to develop strategies that set you apart. What did you learn from your struggles? How can you use those lessons to your advantage?
Stay Focused on Growth: No matter how many times you hit the bottom, keep your eyes on growth. Every setback is a setup for a comeback. Use each fall as a stepping stone to rise higher.
Embracing Life Lessons in Business
Networking: Use your unique background to build meaningful connections. Authenticity attracts genuine relationships.

Example: When networking, share your unique story. People appreciate authenticity and it helps you stand out.
Decision-Making: Leverage your life experiences to make informed decisions. Your past challenges equip you with a unique perspective.

Example: When faced with a tough decision, reflect on similar past experiences and the lessons learned.
Leadership: Lead with empathy and resilience. Understanding hardships allows you to connect with and inspire others.

Example: As a leader, share your journey and the lessons you’ve learned to motivate your team.
Final Thoughts
Life lessons have equipped me with the skills to overcome obstacles and succeed in the business world. Embrace your journey, learn from your experiences, and let them shape you into the person you’re meant to be. Remember, resilience, adaptability, and continuous learning are key. Use your struggles as fuel to push forward. You’ve got this!
