We recently connected with Louis Key and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Louis, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I would say part of it comes from my family, especially, my mother. I grew up watching her work hard day in and day out to provide for my brothers and I. Sometimes even juggling multiple jobs at once. The other part would come from my personal hunger alone. I’ve always been the type of person to chase an immediate dream or goal, no matter how hard the challenge. Sometimes I think I tend to “overwork” myself, which is why I have been working on keep a steady pace at things lately. But then again, I wouldn’t be me without the work ethic.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am Louis Key, an American rapper and videographer from Dayton, Ohio. I have been writing music and poetry for as long as I can remember, but just recently started recording and sharing music in 2020. I have also produced a few beats for myself finding an interest in beat making, but I’m still a bit “new” and still learning. That’s something I plan on getting better at here in the near future. I grew up a shy kid though, but eventually came across music and the art of performing at a young age. It wasn’t until I got a bit older in which I started to take it a bit more seriously and focused more on writing meaningful poems and “raps”. I gained the confidence at about 18, right after I dropped out of college, to visit a recording studio for the first time. Ever since then, I’ve been in love with the craft. I recently dropped a three-song EP titled “BAD$eX, Vol.1” a few months ago, but I’m working on a major project for my supporters. Something closer to a “full body of work”. Also a solo-ran tour titled “Mr. Villain’s Mini Tour” but I don’t want to spoil too much.
Outside of music, I love videography and capturing the moments of life in video form. Most of my music videos were actually shot and edited by myself. I have a YouTube channel I run that goes by “The Lonely Productions” (@thelonelyproductions937) that I have bright future plans for. It’ll be a place for all of my early videography work, a glimpse of what’s to come with rebranding. Short films, animated shorts, podcasts, you name it. I know in order to achieve that goal though, I have to work hard 24/7 and be willing to “bump my head” to learn.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three important skills or qualities to have are a good work ethic, the willingness to learn, and an open mind. A great work ethic comes with time but ultimately discipline. If you can discipline yourself enough to work hard towards any and every goal you have, you can accomplish almost about anything. Also, you’ll always have some type of “drive” that keeps you going. Same thing with an open mind. Being able to understand both sides of things and keeping balance is a talent that most don’t have. An open mind is something that comes with experience yet, understanding. But if you can get to that place of understanding, you’ll realize everyone has some type of motive or “drive”. Whether it’s similar to the one you have or not, there will be a sense of “respect” or willingness to learn you’ll soon develop once you understand.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth in the last 12 months has to be my song writing. Most of the songs I made in the past year were freestyles or songs I literally spent seconds on right before recording. It was my way of testing my skills and proving to myself that if needed, I could perform something on the spot. Now that I have done that however, I want to go back to the pen and pad. When I write my lyrics out and produce my own beat, I feel there’s more substance in the music rather than open, “off the wall” thoughts.
