We recently connected with Lindsay Cooley and have shared our conversation below.
Lindsay, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I’d say regardless of the room, we’re all unique in our own ways- our minds our bodies, the way we carry ourselves… we feel different, we look different, we have different ideas and aspirations. That’s what makes us, us & I think it’s awesome!
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
A lot of people work to live, I live to work and I love it!
Being an entrepreneur, the work never stops. I’m grateful to have found something I love to do. Helping others achieve their dreams is something I’ll never stop doing. There are always projects to work on, new ideas, new models to coach, new photos to look through and when it’s all done… I think of new ideas for my company and the talent I represent…
I collaborate as much as I can with other Agencies, photographers, producers etc.
I don’t think there enough entrepreneurs being as collaborative with other like-minded entrepreneurs as I am.
In our industry I’ve found that many people want everything for themselves, but what I’ve learned is that prosperity comes from being collaborative, inviting others to join your projects and sharing the wealth.
What to look for next!? An exciting thing I’ve started is one on one model coaching, even for those that I don’t represent under Lindsay Cooley Management.
I think there are a ton of amazing models out there and just because they aren’t right fit at the time for my roster, doesn’t mean other Agencies/Management won’t love to represent them! We all need training in areas that we want to grow in. I always say, if you don’t know the rules, you can’t win the game!
I’m also launching full weekend modeling workshops throughout the United States starting in September. They will include coaching, guest speakers, photo shoots and more! Stay tuned!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’d say self esteem is definitely number one in my book… Believing in yourself and not letting the “noise” of others bother you and your dreaming is such an amazing thing.
Having street smarts and knowing when to say no is also super important.
I believe knowing when to say no comes with self esteem though… if you don’t have enough self esteem you wont be able to say no to those things & people you’re uncomfortable with and don’t want to work with.
Lastly, being open to new and uncomfortable opportunities is really important. Sometimes trying something new can be scary, but it can also be really exciting and rewarding. Leap and the net will appear!!!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My MOM. my rock, my ride or die, my number one supporter, the epitome of unconditional love. She’s the best. I wouldn’t be where I am without her.
