We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ashley Egleston a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Ashley with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Having immigrant parents instilled a strong work ethic, they emphasized the importance of hard work and the opportunities for us being in a country where we could grow and have more opportunities than they did.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We are a small business located in Kingsburg California. We are too young girls who open the salon during Covid angainst the odds. We have now been successfully in business for over three years.
Our focus is to provide an environment where hairstylist can grow. The hair industry can be competitive and in our experience, we ran into owners who did not want to see us grow or expand, and we’re constantly told running a salon was not in the cards for us.
We love to help stylist grow their clientele behind the chair. We share our experiences and our business methods to help other stylist. All of our stylist are independent stylist they make all their own money. We don’t charge them for any marketing. We simply help them achieve their goals.
Owning a salon has been very fulfilling experience for us. We’ve been able to turn the negative I have happened to us in the Salon industry and into positives for other stylists.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think it’s important to have thick skin and a short memory. Being able to block out the negativity and remember out purpose was crucial to the growth of our salon. Find a great business partner with the same values and hit the ground running. Don’t let anybody who they tell you they think you are and show them who you are.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
Owning a salon can be very overwhelming, especially with the current economy. Fortunately, all of our stylists are thriving and so is our salon. Being overwhelmed is part of the process, but you just have to learn how to navigate and definitely have a positive mindset when it comes to ownership. It’s not always going to be a good day but most of the good days outweigh a few bad days.
