Meet Margaret Hatch

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Margaret Hatch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Margaret, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

Throughout my life, I knew that I wanted to be in a field of work that helped people and made them feel good about themselves. I originally went to school to be a teacher, but took a turn when I started working at a mom and pop salon in a small town. The energy of the stylists, the fashion and flare, made me very excited to be at a job working in such a big industry. Then and there, I knew I wanted to pursue hair and take the risk of changing my career path. I really liked hands-on work and conversing with people frequently throughout my day. After five years of being a licensed cosmetologist and now a small business owner of a year and a half, I am more in love with this line of work than when I first started my hair journey 9 years ago.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Hey there! I’m Margaret, I’m a cutting and styling specialist. I’ve started my brand/ small business called The Girl Who Cuts My Hair. I’m a single chair business that works in a booth rental salon in downtown Portland, Maine called, The Apartment. I specialize in all hair types, textures, and lengths, offering a luxury service experience. I’ve enjoyed providing a service that feels relaxed and a haircut that works for my guests lifestyle and hair goals. My most popular NEW service I’ve added to my menu is The Luxury Haircut Experience. This includes a relaxing scalp scrub treatment, scalp serum treatment, deep conditioning treatment with steam, an extended scalp massage, haircut, and choice of blowout and style! Everyone is loving this.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities or areas of knowledge that were most impactful were continued education and professional development, try not to sell yourself short because dreams do come true, finally network and stay connected. I’ve taken over 100 classes and been to multiple shows/conferences. I’ve taken little nuggets from each of them and still revert back to old notes and techniques. I never in a million years thought I had what it takes to be a business owner. Take opportunities and run with it! You never know what might happen. I have a handful of people whom I ask questions frequently. I was once someone who was hustling to build a clientele and I know what it’s like to build from the ground up. Because these people have helped me so much with little things I asked about running my own business that I’ve started a small networking group to help others expand their networks.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

My colleagues have been the most helpful and supportive for me in being successful! We all started this process together. I have a great level of gratitude for them in their support and kindness to me. When imposter syndrome hits, I know to turn to them for help. We all go through mega trials and tribulations and I know I can always trust them if I need assistance. I know they’ll be honest with me if I need advice. But more importantly I know all of them look out for my higher good and I can’t thank them enough for always being there for me.
