We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Courtney Lynn and Quinn Russell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Courtney Lynn and Quinn below.
Courtney Lynn and Quinn, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
This is a great question and I am not sure if we have completely overcome this feeling. We often doubt ourselves, our art, our talents, etc… However, that being said, we stay true to ourselves and enjoy all that we do and I think continuing to remind ourselves of this is what helps us feel authentic, real, and worthy of any successes we accomplish.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Courtney and I are live musicians with differing passions for the art, but come together in our love of music and for each other. We have been creating music together since 2015 and this, not so coincidentally, is also when we started to realize our feelings for each other were deeper than friendship. We created a life together and a pursuit of passion together and have never looked back. Courtney was creating music and writing long before she met me and I have been performing since I was 3 years old, so it was a match made in heaven. When we started to perform and create together it all just seemed so effortless and natural. Almost as if, we were the missing puzzle piece to one another’s journey.
As we continue to grow in our marriage together in hopes to start a family, we continue to venture in new performances and songwriting experiences. We take each opportunity as a gift as it comes our way and continue to stay humbled by the other talents we meet along the way. One of my favorite songs is a song we will be releasing at the end of this year called “Side Roads” the message speaks on how no matter what people say (even your own mind) you should take the road less traveled if that is where you truly find your happiness. The road of a full time performer is no simple trek, but the joy and passion outweigh the other options, at least in our opinion. So… we will keep on taking Side Roads and enjoy all of the chaos in between. We truly hope to continue to grow and expand our reach in the music world, while maintaining a genuine connection to the folks we are so lucky to have in our lives!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say that perseverance is one of the biggest characters that will come into play for any artist. However, there is a balance that has to be maintained or the industry can be crushing and ultimately it can steal the joy that you once felt for the art you so love. When we learned to appreciate all of the small successes and really find gratitude for those moments it took so much pressure off of our plate to get to the next BIG thing. The journey can be whatever you make it. We would say, 1) stay focused on what it is that you truly love about your art and focus on that. 2) try your best to drop the comparisons ( all art is self expression and is subjective, there will always be people to look up to, but people will look up to you as well). 3) Celebrate ALL of the wins even the ones you assume to be insignificant.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Social media. Social Media platforms are the best thing that ever happened to artists and the worst. How can it be both? because it has allowed so much opportunity in places that we would have most likely would have never been able to reach (AKA worldwide coverage). However, it has also taken the place of organic presence and has created another job for the artist that seems so daunting if it doesn’t come natural. Now instead of being the songwriter, the artist, the performer and the booker, you are also in charge of being your worldwide marketer and developing just as much if not more content on social media than touring or playing live shows. I know that many artists have found success with social media and I think that all of the doors it can open are awesome, but I find it difficult to keep up with and still find the joy in it all. That being said, we are always trying to stay positive around this and are hoping to find others we can learn from!
