We were lucky to catch up with Lindy Fox recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lindy, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I would say my resilience comes from returning to my first love over and over again. My first love being fabric and fashion. After any disappointment or setback in the production process, I know I can take a pause, be with friends and family and return after I feel refreshed.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the founder and head designer of Lindy Fox, a womenswear brand based out of California and NYC. The brand calls upon the expertise of artisans to create truly unique pieces. Observing a process-focused practice in the way it operates, the studio experiments with custom dye-ing, manipulating textiles, and intricate draping. Each piece is made from the highest quality yarns from Peru and Italy, given the utmost attention to detail and lovingly made in California, supporting high-end manufacturing in the United States.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me the three skills that have proven most useful are, firstly my education at FIT in NYC. Learning from experts in the field was a rich experience and one I wouldn’t trade for the world. Secondly, getting as much internship experience as I could while in college. Thirdly, working on sustaining diligent focus in my 20s was a worthwhile endeavor. We live in such a fast-paced, ADD world that if you can sustain long focus on one project, you will stand out from the crowd.
Advice I would say to the younger generation is stay curious, keep learning, and learn from history as well.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
In this season of my life, time to create is the hardest to come by. I have two small kids and one on the way! Motherhood is a job that never stops especially when the kids are little but they’re so cute I don’t want to miss anything. So I’ve scaled down my creative endeavors quite a bit to be realistic about how much I can accomplish. And at the end of the day, my greatest accomplishment has been becoming a mother.
