We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Derrick Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Derrick, so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
From being a young magician. You learn how everyone is nervous at first. How to ease their mind. How to be genuinely interested in them. Get them talking. Laughing. Then get into the show.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I run the non profit poetry press write bloody. It’s been 20years. And I run the creativity podcast Party with Honor. I ghost write books and write screenplays.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
My advice is to not focus on your passion. Focus on what the world needs from you.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed I go on a long drive. Or walk. Music on. No solving. Just becoming unwound. Then I unpack the feels and write. Then I make a new to do list.
