Meet Rachel Sorbet

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rachel Sorbet a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Rachel, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

For me, overcoming imposter syndrome was a function of simply working hard at my craft. Over learn and practice until you can’t get it wrong. It’s a simple formula that works!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a portrait photographer who specializes in personal branding and business portraits. I’ve found an even smaller niche, focusing my energy on a demographic I feel called to serve: The 40+ woman. Shifting my business to focus on this niche allowed me to cater everything we do to this demographic. In 2023, I had the opportunity to move my studio and do a complete retail space build-out. We carved out a section of the studio for an in-house salon where my makeup artists can get clients camera-ready. This is a game changer for busy businesswomen because everything is done at one location, making efficient use of the client’s time.

Female entrepreneurship is a personal topic that’s close to my heart. Being an entrepreneur can be isolating. I wanted to support other women in business and help them be recognized for their achievements, so I founded and am the publisher of Boss Babes Magazine. This is an annual publication where we photograph and feature the inspirational stories of 50 women in business. To piggyback on this magazine and foster those relationships year-round, we also host networking events six times a year exclusively for women.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

There were three most critical things that propelled me to success: Grit, sales and marketing skills, and an interest I chose to follow relentlessly. No matter your profession, sales and marketing skills rank top of the list. Pursue something you’re interested in. Your career doesn’t have to be your greatest passion in life, but it needs to be something you’re interested in. Reverse engineer where you want to end up and start moving in that direction. Learn your career inside and out, and always continue your education whether with business books, podcasts, conferences, or one-on-one coaching, it doesn’t matter. Always be learning.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

My dream is to take Boss Babes Magazine into multiple cities across the US. I’m looking for women’s organizations, sponsors, venture capital funds, and similar partnerships that support female entrepreneurship and who are interested in showcasing women in business. I can be reached at bossbabesmagazine.com.
