We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael Tamzil a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Man, let me tell you, my resilience? It’s all thanks to my mom. Growing up with a single parent, you don’t get the luxury of slacking off. You gotta hustle twice as hard, just like she did. And then there’s my passion—that fire inside that pushes you out of your comfort zone way before you’re ready. It’s that mix of grit and relentless work ethic that’s driven me to chase my dreams. And thank God, I haven’t lost it. Sometimes, burning the candle at both ends is the only option you’ve got, especially in the beginning. It’s tough, but it works.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve done it all—from airbrushing t-shirts to becoming an art director, creative director, photographer, and entrepreneur. But as I evolved, I realized something: I’m an artist, through and through, both in business and in my personal life. That’s the core of everything I do. Forget work-life balance; I chose to fully embrace being an artist. Owning that identity has given me a unique perspective on projects and clients. I believe that’s my edge—helping brands stay authentic and true to themselves.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important qualities you need to have and keep working on are simple: Stay true, stay passionate, and stay hungry. If you live by these three principles, you’re set for life. It sounds basic, but it’s tough because external influences can be strong and might shift your perspective. No matter what, look within and find your way back if you get lost on your journey. I always say, ROI isn’t just return on investment—it’s return on ingenuity.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When you feel overwhelmed, don’t sweat it—that’s life. Everyone goes through it. Just don’t lose yourself. But if you do, then dive all the way in, get lost for a bit, and come back stronger and harder. Surround yourself with key people who matter in your life and run things by them. Whatever you do, give it 100%. Don’t half-ass anything. I can’t give you a step-by-step strategy; anyone who claims they can is full of it. We’re all different. The best we can do is support each other.
