We recently connected with Brittany Williams and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
It’s ironic, as an educational and clinical herbalist, one of my focuses is imparting the understanding that self-care is instrumental for health and wellbeing. However, when it comes to my own self-care, I find it to be challenging, especially as a small business owner. There is always something to be done, something that needs to be handled, something that needs to be thought over. Becoming overwhelmed is very easy which can quickly lead to burnout. I’ve seen this with other business owners and because of this I have tried to put a priority on my own self-care. I’ve embraced the art of forgiving myself when I don’t complete my todo list for the day or week. I find time to reconnect and just be, For me this looks like enjoying a nice cup of tea (hot or cold) first thing in the morning, usually with herbs that support focus, is calming or soothing, or something that is called a trophorestorative which is a nourishing herb that restores function and balance to body systems. I am an herbalist after all. 😉 I make sure to dedicate at least 15 minutes daily for meditation and breath-work. I walk my dogs every morning as well. All of these things take time, but ensure I start the day off on the right foot. I love to end the day with some calming stretches to loosen the stress buildup in my muscles and of course an herbal mocktail to round out the evening encouraging a release of the days stressors.
These rituals help me to stay focused, balanced, and able to put things into perspective. This is imperative for me to keep a clear head when teaching workshops, seeing clients, or trying to create content or balance my books. There’s so much that needs to be done as a small business owner, so many hats that need to be worn that without the tools I have acquired I don’t think I could be effective doing what I do. I can start the day with a clear head (mostly) and end the day at peace allowing my body the rest it needs to start all over again the next day.
Of course there are times when I have to skip a ritual or two and I definitely feel it when I do. Enough that I try everything in my power to not miss out on the things that I know are instrumental for my own peace of mind and in turn instrumental for the success of my business.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an educational and clinical herbalist and I also have herbal products on website and at popups in the Baltimore, Maryland area. I stumbled into an herbal apothecary in the mid 90s and was immediately entranced. I absolutely love teaching others how to use herbs to support health and well-being. I teach many different kinds of in person and virtual herbal workshops including workshops about mental health, hormonal balance, menopause, smokable herbs, vitality and sexual health, sleep and relaxation, and cocktails and mocktails. I’m thrilled that I have recently partnered with several local businesses where I teach many of my workshops and have pop up events. Including Stem & Vine, The Painting Workshop, Nourish, Creative Alliance, and Full Moon Acupuncture. There is nothing more exciting to me than planning new workshops or taking on a new client. I’m very passionate about embracing holistic methods of health and I incorporate that in everything I do.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Confidence, a certain amount of risk taking, and planning are all qualities that I believe have had the greatest impact in my journey. For confidence I have learned to have confidence in my knowledge and skills. I remind myself that everyone’s journey is different and I am only competing with myself, no one else. Risk taking is connected to confidence, and even the planning. There is a certain amount of faith and a just go for it attitude that I believe is necessary. Putting yourself out there and being willing to take risks can have great outcomes. And when the not so great outcomes happen, which they will, jumping back on the horse and carrying on is key. And of course planning is important. Setting goals and ways to obtain them are the backbone of success.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My current challenge is a wonderful one to have. It is one of abundance. I have fostered many different connections with local businesses and it really seems like they all responded as one. Now the feeling of being overwhelmed is threatening. I remind myself though, that this is a good problem to have. I try to stay focused and organized and not overcommit. That last part is the hardest for me, overcommitting! I fear that something will slip through the cracks and will be missed because of all the commitments I have made. I try to remain focused and rely on planning methods to keep me on track.
