We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Katie Morgan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Katie , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
In my writing, I keep my creativity alive by carrying around a notepad. Sparks of creativity are just that..sparks. They go as quickly as they come so I write everything down before it’s lost.
Then, I run my ideas by my boys. Children are little balls of electric imagination. If you want to feel creative, look at the world through a child’s eyes. Everything becomes magic.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My newest project is PRINTED FRAME. It was created by pure chance when I accidentally broke an antique frame in my living room. As I was piecing it back together I said through frustrated tears “why don’t they just print the frames right on the canvas so this doesn’t happen.” In that moment PRINTED FRAME was born. They say necessity is the mother of all invention and this was a need that had not been met yet. After a few prototypes my vision was realized. Now anyone can easily upload their photos into our frame template, then send it to print. Luxurious museum quality frames can grace your walls without the responsibility of caring for a priceless antique or the hefty price tag. And the best part is these lightweight frames feel a lot safer on my wall with my kids running wild too. It’s never been done before, so there is nothing like it on the market. It has been very exciting to launch and watch grow.
DON’T BURN DINNER is my funny cooking show on YouTube and Instagram where I’m teaching myself to cook food my kids will actually eat. It also dabbles in arts and crafts, traveling with kids, renovating furniture and mom stuff.
My internationally selling book ”Never the Lot” is about Christmas tree nervous to grow because he doesn’t want to be chopped down. I have several new books in the works to look out for.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back the best advice I received was: if you always learn something new, you’ll never grow old. Knowledge is the true fountain of youth. Be determined to acquire as many skills as you can and never stop educating yourself.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
This is going to sound silly, but when I feel overwhelmed, I bake a cake. I keep boxes of easy cake mix in the pantry, then I give my boys a spatula. It turns life into a party.
