Meet Chris Chang

We were lucky to catch up with Chris Chang recently and have shared our conversation below.

Chris , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

As a visual storyteller, I always keep my senses open to keep the creativity alive. I take inspiration from everything I consume daily – a podcast episode, a pop song, or even a Pinterest board. Meanwhile, I think what’s more important is to learn from the great works that are already out there and create a system to organize your inspirations. The most challenging part of kicking off a creative project is the initial phase where you set up the visuals and tonality of your stories. But once you have a visual/audio vault to draw inspiration from, the stream of creativity will bring the project to where it should be.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a video journalist who believes video journalism should be as informative as it is entertaining. That’s what I’ve been striving for since I set foot in the media industry, telling stories about minorities, social movements, and history with camera lenses and animated graphics. I’m currently a video producer and social media host for USA TODAY. I was born and raised in Taiwan, and I’m passionate about multicultural stories with global implications.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Following the first question, I would take inspiration from one of Steve Jobs’ most famous quotes, “Stay hungry. Stay foolish,” I’d encourage everyone to stay curious, keep learning, and be open-minded. It may sound totally clichéd, but these values are easier said than done, let alone making them a habit. I’d suggest everyone constantly learn and practice whatever they are passionate about – whether it’s sign language, cosplay, or Chinese medicine – as niche as it could be because these interests are what define who you are. At the end of the day, even things that are seemingly unrelated to your profession could be great fertilization and move you forward in your journey. The key is to embrace new knowledge, adventures, and experiences, and the virtue of this openness is truly invaluable.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I’m currently looking for opportunities to craft visual stories focusing on the future of the progressive movement in this country and the pragmatic policy reforms at the local levels that can change people’s lives. So if anyone has any thoughts or knows others who do, feel free to shoot me a message! But honestly, any creative connection would be extremely welcomed!
