Meet De shawn Montel Fowler

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful De shawn Montel Fowler. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with De shawn Montel below.

De shawn Montel, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

I’ve been very fortunate and blessed to say I grew up in a house hold that was very intense on instilling confidence within ourselves at a young age.

My mother grew up as an artist as well and she pushed us all to keep believing in what you will have vs what you don’t have. She has always said to me that it’s ok if someone doesn’t like what you do because someone will and you should keep putting out what you feel for those that enjoy connecting with what you make.

My aunt also was very big into us having high confidence in what we believe in because if we don’t, who will?

Every day I thank God for the amazing support from the two most impactful women in my entire life.

Without them I wouldn’t be able to be who people know me as today.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is De Shawn Montel Fowler Aka Mr. Fowler and I am a multi disciplined artist that focuses on creating work to invoke feeling through music, dance, and visual art.

I studied dance for 25 years taking numerous classes from ballet, contemporary, modern, jazz, and eventually hip hop which stuck the most and with that I went on to dance for the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Scream Team!

Nowadays, I’ve transitioned dance culture into the music I listen to the most and have been curating sounds for spaces and putting together monthly house music shows with my collective Smooth Talk for the last 2 1/2 years called Welcome Home.

When im not working on projects with my collective, im jotting down more ideas for my brand called Connections Radio where I release monthly mixes via there and also guest mixes of other artist. Eventually I will start doing live shows with it and make it an experience not just for the artist but for the viewers giving people the opportunity to get to know their favorite artist on a deeper level.

In some of my recent performances, I’ve been pushing for people to understand that music does tie into dance deeper than we can realize sometimes. So one of the major things I’ve doing as of late is dancing full out while playing/emceeing at the same time to give the people the best experience possible and to fully understand the music being played.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Being ambitious, open minded, and creative with everything I put my all into has helped me grow like no other in ways I can’t describe.

The only advice I can give someone is a simple phrase that has gotten me to where I am now. You’re a lot closer to where you want to be vs. where you came from.

And that right there is everything you need to know about yourself. Stay focused, stay driven, stay ambitious, but always stay creative and be the best version of you everywhere you go.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I get overwhelmed, I tend to be alone and lock myself in my room or go on a drive alone. Depending on the scenario I choose one or the other and each direction I choose always has a solution.
My only advice I can give is have an open mind and lock yourself away for or step away until you’re ready to come back out as the best version you can possibly be for yourself.
