We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Wendigo Woodworking a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Wendigo, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
Our work ethic stems from the strong example set by our parents. They instilled in us the value of hard work from a young age, showing us that dedication and perseverance are key to achieving our goals. Their relentless commitment to their own work and responsibilities deeply influenced our approach to our projects and business. We’ve carried that same level of determination into everything we do, ensuring that we always deliver the highest quality products to our customers.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
In just two years, our woodworking business has seen remarkable growth, especially within the local vendor market. We specialize in creating one-of-a-kind epoxy and wood pieces, such as custom bourbon flights, serving trays, and wine caddies. By focusing on unique designs and high-quality craftsmanship, we’ve been able to carve out a niche for ourselves and build a loyal customer base. Our commitment to using the finest materials, like olive-wood sourced from Turkey and locally sourced hardwoods, ensures that every piece we create is both beautiful and durable. This dedication to excellence has been a key factor in our rapid expansion and success. In the near future we are hoping to expand on our knowledge and resources to start working on larger scale projects. We are really excited to start working on large tables, counter tops and more.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1)Willingness to try new things.
2)Persistence and determination.
3)Enjoy the process.
Starting a new craft can be both exciting and intimidating. Here’s some advice to keep in mind as you embark on your creative journey:
1. **Embrace the Learning Curve**: Every expert was once a beginner. It’s okay to make mistakes and face challenges along the way. Each misstep is a learning opportunity.
2. **Practice Patience**: Mastery takes time. Don’t rush the process. Enjoy each step and be patient with yourself as you develop your skills.
3. **Stay Curious**: Don’t be afraid to try new techniques or materials. Experimentation can lead to unexpected and rewarding results.
4. **Seek Inspiration**: Look for inspiration in various places—online communities, workshops, or nature. Seeing others’ work can spark new ideas and keep you motivated.
5. **Ask for Help**: Don’t hesitate to reach out to more experienced crafters. Most people are happy to share their knowledge and offer support.
6. **Celebrate Small Wins**: Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Each accomplishment builds your confidence and keeps you moving forward.
7. **Keep Creating**: Even if you feel discouraged, keep going. Persistence is key. The more you practice, the better you’ll become.
Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination. Enjoy the process and be proud of every piece you create.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The most helpful people in overcoming challenges have been my girlfriend JoVonne and my partner and friend Zac. JoVonne consistently challenges me to be better and never lets me settle for less than my best. Zac, on the other hand, is instrumental in our work together, pushing me to excel and helping me refine my skills. Additionally, all the people we’ve met along the way have contributed immensely by sharing their knowledge, offering support, and inspiring us with their own journeys. Together, they’ve created a support network that keeps me motivated and focused on achieving my goals.
