Meet Connor Overbay

 

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Connor Overbay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Connor with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

I believe my strong work ethic comes from my family, they have always pushed me to work hard and do my best. I can remember watching my parents when they were young and new to their respective companies, they where working hard trying to make their way up the corporate ladder to put our family in a better position. After many years of blood, sweat and tears I have seen them reach the upper echelons of their companies and this has showed me that hard work and perseverance really does pay off in the long run. I also accredit a good amount my work ethic to my wife, Shannon. I watched her work multiple jobs while going to college full time and graduating with her bachelor’s degree. She has always pushed and supported me on anything I have ever wanted to pursue. Without her I would not have had the confidence to start the podcast.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am the Host and Creator of the Who Are You? Podcast. We produce hour long interviews with local business owners, nonprofits, friends, artist, musicians and more to learn their backstory’s of how they chose their profession/passion, what where some of their tough moments in their journeys and overall promote the guest/buissness. One of the big things I like to highlight on my platform is the importance of mental health and promote talking through issues. One of the things I think makes us different is we are a traveling podcast; we come to the person or business and make that the background for that episode. We also promote the guest or business for an entire week with daily videos and pictures on all of our social media. I believe all people have a story and with doing this long form conversation you get to learn more about the person than what you would with a thirty second clip. My favorite thing about doing the podcast is getting to meet all the amazing people in Jacksonville and help give a platform to promote themselves.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The first quality I think that helps is that I’m an extravert. I’ve always been and able to strike up a conversation with all kinds of people. My second quality is that I am genuinely curious about many things. Every guest that I have had on the podcast is someone that I was curious about and wanted to learn more about their business or passion. Finally, I would say the third quality would be that I am always willing to hear the other side of an argument, even though I may not agree I’m willing to hear your point of view to better understand why I feel the way I do. My piece of advice would be to step out of your comfort zone and maybe go start a conversation with someone you don’t know, you never know what you might learn from that person, to stay curious and always be willing to learn.
