We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Leonard Samuels a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Leonard with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Raised by a single mother who had to work in order to feed me and procure for the household. I always felt impressed by her work ethic. She was able to manage a 9 to 5 job and took pride at what she did and never took a day off or a sick day. Having that example as a child was super important to me. So no matter what I do for my company, I always give it 110% because nothing is ever not important. That’s at least what my mom taught me by example.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Since I started Zayde Creative, I’ve noticed a lack of unity among companies. I’ve been focusing on creating an atmosphere where we don’t feel like we have to play against each other and are there to help each other out. One of my passion projects connected to my company is the Creative Chutzpah podcast, where Rico Nasol and I interview people in the industry and showcase the narrative of what it took for them to become who they are now. I hope this podcast reaches everyone who has ever had self doubt, and understands we’re here to help each other in any way we can.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
There’s a time and place for everything; part of my development was understanding when I was ready for the next step of my career. One of the hardest lessons as someone who likes to know and has a lot of backup plans is allowing things to work out organically. It’s been beneficial in my career, and it’s something that I would advise anyone to give the importance it needs not to speed up your path just because you want to be at the end of your journey but because the most important part is the actual journey.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I love collaborating with more people and getting them to come to the Creative Chutzpah podcast and tell their story, or not or whatever they want to say about their careers and personal journey. It’s been helpful, at least that’s what people tell me, to hear the stories of other successful people in the industry. And see their humanity and know that they are like everyone else, with struggles and success stories or, you know, sometimes it could even be something they struggle with. So, if any of you are in the entertainment industry and would love to come and join the conversation, we would love hear your story because it takes Chutzpah to be creative!
