We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jake Santiago. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jake below.
Jake, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
When I first started Alaric Radio I had people saying “This guy cant be for real” and similar sayings. Now Ive past my 18 month mark and local and national bands are happy that i promote them for free. I am a Idaho state non profit so I do run everything off donations. So it can be a bit rough sometimes because of funding. But luckily I have an excellent business partner who is equally as motivated with me on shining a light on our local artists as I am.
Since inception I have made social media advertisements with bands giving it a bit of a retro feel to some of them. I happily represent all aspects of music but most specifically the metal heads and punks. Especially punk.
After a while people started to understand that I don’t have any intentions other then making all of our brands stand out and more importantly put Boise more on the map then ever before. Thats the goal anyhow.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I come from a military background. A big part of my work ethic came from this. I worked logistics for a while and it taught me how to coordinate and think outside the box to make things happen.
The most exciting thing to me is watching the musicians playing and seeing them having fun. On the flip side I also love watching a crowd. Truth be told im more of an introvert. However I know how to bring entertainment to the masses at our live events and concerts because I truly believe we need to turn the clock back a bit and really focus on people doing things that make them happy…….like watching music.
My social media is filled with fun happy things as well as sinister/murderous videos and flyers. I am very into horror and all around darkness as a whole. I love October especially when we do shows because i typically will do make-up for them.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Determination- I cant tell you how many times I wanted to quit. Finances, life, hospitalizations…..All almost took me out of the game. If you can keep telling yourself “pick it up” then you will…..end of story.
Being Open minded- You have to be open to suggestion and criticism in order to grow as an artist. As a promoter this is very important to get a good luck on what people like to see and make some minor changes to have big results.
Be Honest- This one sounds easy, but business isn’t all sunshine and rainbows either. The best you can do is show your project with your intentions behind it and push from there. If you know what your product is make sure your catering to the right audience.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
The type of people I want to collaborate with are those that have a passion for music. I like the rebellious type that believes music is the saving grace to our failing society. What I mean by that is that so many people get wrapped up with the day to day, Inflation sucks! Theres a lot going on where most american’s are not having the “best time” Im not trying to get politcial by any means. I just am more saying people need to realize what the power of music does for your soul.
