We were lucky to catch up with Alejandro Espaillat recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alejandro , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I believe I get my resilience from several sources. Firstly, my family has always been a massive pillar of support for me. They’ve taught me the value of perseverance and shown me that even in difficult times, I can find strength through connection and encouragement.
Secondly, my own experiences have shaped my resilience. Overcoming challenges in my personal and professional life has made me more adaptable, focused, and determined. Each obstacle has allowed me to learn and grow, helping me build a stronger foundation to handle future difficulties.
Lastly, I find resilience through self-care and mindfulness practices. Whether boating, reading a good book, or praying, these activities help me recharge and maintain a positive mindset.
My resilience comes from a combination of supportive relationships, life experiences, and personal practices that keep me grounded and focused.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, I see three essential qualities that have shaped my path: perseverance, resilience, and compassion for others. These attributes have been instrumental in my professional endeavors and in how I approach life’s various challenges.
Firstly, perseverance has been crucial. The journey through medical school, specialized training, and countless hours in surgery is long and demanding. There were moments when the sheer volume of work seemed overwhelming, but a steadfast focus on my goals helped me push through. I advise anyone starting their journey to cultivate a strong sense of determination. Set clear goals, break them into manageable steps, and stay committed, even when the going gets tough. Remember, each step forward, no matter how small, is progress.
Resilience, the ability to recover and adapt in the face of difficulties, has also been vital. The medical field can be unpredictable and challenging, with moments of success juxtaposed with setbacks. Learning to bounce back, learning from each experience, and continually striving to improve is critical. I encourage newcomers to embrace a growth mindset. Understand that setbacks are not endpoints but opportunities for learning and growth. Keep adaptability at your core, and let resilience guide you through any career journey’s inevitable ebbs and flows.
Lastly, compassion for others is at the heart of what I do. In healthcare and any profession, the human connection is paramount. Understanding and empathizing with those you work with and those you serve builds trust and fosters a more fulfilling professional experience. For those early in their paths, I suggest practicing active listening and seeking to understand others’ perspectives and experiences. Compassionate interactions aren’t just beneficial for others; they enrich your life and career in immeasurable ways.
These qualities—perseverance, resilience, and compassion—form a strong foundation for any pursuit. By developing these traits, individuals can navigate their journeys with purpose, adaptability, and a heartfelt connection to those around them.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Over the past year, my most significant area of growth has been learning, researching, and studying how to properly implement artificial intelligence (AI) systems within the healthcare sector, particularly in ophthalmology. Delving into this field and understanding the complexities involved in deploying AI ethically and effectively has been an enriching experience.
One critical aspect I focused on is ensuring that AI systems are unbiased and respect patient privacy. In healthcare, maintaining the trust of our patients is paramount, and we must use technology to enhance care without compromising confidentiality or fairness. I’ve spent considerable time exploring best practices for data handling and training AI models to ensure inclusivity and mitigate any inherent biases in datasets.
Efficiency and cost-effectiveness are also critical factors. A primary goal has been to implement AI solutions that streamline workflow, reduce costs, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. This involves rigorous testing and validation to ensure these systems can operate at a large scale without sacrificing quality of care. I’ve worked alongside interdisciplinary teams, combining insights from data science, clinical practice, and healthcare management to create practical and impactful solutions.
Regarding advice for others looking to grow similarly, I would emphasize the importance of staying curious and open-minded. AI in healthcare is rapidly evolving, and there is always something new to learn. Collaborate with experts across different fields to better understand the challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, maintaining a patient-centered approach is crucial. Keep in mind the ultimate goal of improving patient care and ensuring that technology serves as a tool to enhance, rather than replace, the human elements of healthcare.
This journey has broadened my horizons and reinforced the value of continuous learning and ethical practice in advancing healthcare. I look forward to furthering this work and contributing to the exciting intersection of technology and medicine.
