We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tameka Anderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tameka, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I remember the first time I was introduced to the idea of purpose. I was watching an interview with Maya Angelou and she shared her mission statement, “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”
I was captivated by her words. I felt compelled to lean in and ask myself the question, ‘What is my purpose? What cause am I willing to pursue with passion, compassion, humor, and style?’
I began researching information on how to find your purpose.
I came across a book titled, “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren and I must say it changed my life. I took the 40-day challenge and I was hooked.
I learned more about myself in that timeframe than I ever had before.
My purpose is the help others learn how to hack disruptive behaviors faster so ironically enough, after spending 40 days reading and writing in this book, I realized that I could help others identify their purpose by asking one question.
‘What has caused you the most pain in life?’ I realized that my purpose was at the center of what I found the most painful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My clients have dubbed me the “FUN” coach mostly because I help them bring out their inner gold in a fun way. I am a writer, of course, I had to incorporate an acronym so FUN means, “Finding Unmet Needs” because that’s exactly what I help my clients do.
I spent most of my life surviving trauma and it was a hard, lonely road. Had I known how to tap into my purpose faster, it wouldn’t have been so bad. This is why it’s important for me to help others tap into theirs.
Everything I do is to help others raise their level of self-awareness so they can identify unmet needs faster and uncover their purpose. Purpose helps fuel us positively towards changing the world.
I heard someone say, “I take care of me so you don’t have to” and I have adopted this motto into my life and believe if we all learned how to truly take care of ourselves we could make the world a better place for everyone around us.
Taking care of ourselves is more than going to the gym, having a spa day, and saying ‘no’ to others. It’s deeper than that. I’ve learned that fear produces bad behavior so asking ourselves the daily question, ‘What am I afraid of?’ helps us dive deeper into why we do what we do and helps us learn to take care of that fear so we won’t project it onto others.
That being said, I am launching a podcast called, “Literally, Not Therapy” in the fall of 2024 because I want to help high-achievers raise their level of self-awareness by asking the tough questions. It’s gonna be a fun show (pun intended) and I look forward to helping more people around the world tap into their brilliance by taking care of themselves so we can eliminate some of the sadness in the world.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Such a great question. I believe self-reflection, humility and humor were the most impactful in my journey because without them you will not survive trauma. Trauma has a way of stealing your joy and holding your heart hostage. And you cannot impact the world in a positive way when your heart is on lock down.
If you are early in your journey, the best way to develop these skills are to value everyone, go deeper with someone, and harm no one. When you learn to value everyone, you won’t want to harm them however you will also understand that not everyone has capacity and capability to be inner circle close. This helps you adapt and identify who does and go deeper only when they have shown you they are wiling and capable to.
When you do this, it keeps your heart alive in such a way that literally changes the life of everyone who comes in contact with you. This is the passion Maya Angelou spoke about. This is how we change the world. One human at a time.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely! I believe collaboration is how we make bigger waves in the world I just started hosting Cry Parties and I look to partner with other high-achievers who have identified their purpose, love helping others bring out their inner gold, have fun, and want to shake up the world by asking tough questions.
