We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Joseph Cunningham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Joseph below.
Joseph, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I faced imposter syndrome when working with around 30 people to create a short film where I had a top lead role managing over $315,000 worth of top end cinema equipment. I was younger most people and found myself (despite being qualified) struggling to feel like I could fully step into this role as a Director of Photography on this short film. I felt like I wasn’t able to fully take the reins for fear that others thought I wasn’t capable, too bossy, or prideful.
The way that I was able to overcome this was by catching these abrasive thoughts and choosing to think of realities rather than probabilities. In reality, I knew that I was fully capable to shoot this short film but I needed to say “no” to dwelling on the possibilities and “what if’s.”
Practically, I did this through prayer. As a follower of Jesus, I am able to trust that He had me with these people, in this specific time, telling this specific story for a reason. This is the way that I overcame imposter syndrome… by recognizing I can have hope and reassurance by trusting in Jesus’ plan for me (Jeremiah 29:11). At the end of the day, who would want to rely on their own self esteem that can waver constantly. Especially when there is the ability to rest in who Jesus says I am, his beloved.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I have been chasing a career of telling cinematic and inspiring stories for the past 6 years. Throughout high school I created a freelance business that kickstarted my desire for capturing unique visuals and adventures. I find myself currently attending film school at Biola University, named top film university in the world (according to Variety & The Wrap).
Here I find myself collaborating with hundreds of film crew members to work on countless projects. My most recent short film I DP’d, I was able to rent out $315,000 worth of cinema equipment. This included the Arri Alexa Mini LF, along with Atlas Orions and more. This was to tell the story of “Halfway”, written and directed by Markus Kashouh.
As of late, you can find me working for a production company (bangbang studios) this summer in Santa Barbara working on ad campaigns for brands like BMW, Brooks Running, and more.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Humility
Humility is an absolute must in life, in general, but even more so in film. It’s something I’m learning and growing in more and more by the day.
2. Grit
Grit has been necessary for me to be able to work harder than those around me and push through when I hit wall after wall. Grit and talent help you succeed, if you don’t have as much talent, make up for it in sheer grit. When I have felt like I have lacked talent, I have doubled down on the grit to make up for it.
3. Determination
Having determination that you’ll arrive at your desired goals will set you apart in life and in the film industry. Being confident that through grit and talent, you will humbly achieve your goals, will give you hope to hold on to when you’re unsure.
I believe these are rules to live by, not only in life, but also in the film industry or for anyone aspiring to get into media. They have played a huge role in my journey so far and I believe will be cornerstones in your journey too.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am always looking to connect and collaborate with people. Whether client, crew members or aspiring filmmakers, I am happy to discuss pitches, ideas, and project possibilities. I’m very passionate about connecting with others. I believe everyone has something to learn from one another!
