Meet Brandon Thomson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brandon Thomson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Brandon, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

So, on my father side, I come from a long line of men that started their own business. My grandfather uses to tell me stories of my great uncles starting their own business at a young age and how many trials and tribulations they had to face to get to their goals. So, when there are times, I felt I wanted to give up I always remember how much drive and resilience they had to keep moving forward which inspired me to never stop.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Since I was a kid, I knew I had a passion to write comics when I use to make amateur comic strips for my dad and see how it would make him smile when he would read them. Now as a writer I get such an excitement when I open my laptop and start writing my scripts because I feel my brain is getting back-to-back ideas when I’m world building and developing interactions between my characters.

It’s always been a dream of mine to one day get my comics seen by the public eye on a domestic and international stage.

Last year I recently started my own LLC known as Steel Magnus Studios which focus on publishing and entertainment of series I’m currently working on. As of now I’m currently working on three comics projects with a team of several artist and editors supporting me on getting these stories launch to the public. One of which is now completed called “WolfBane”, a superhero tale that focus on Gods and Champions but with a bit of a anime flare to it.

WolfBane issue one is completed so were in the process of doing a Kickstarter to get the first issue printed for backers. The prelaunch page is now available to follow, and the official launch date is August 2, 2024.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Whenever I get ask this question, I always say these three things for people to have which is to do research, take breaks, and most of all don’t rush your craft.

When working on comics always do your research on the market and how to go about it because the comic book industry isn’t easy to get into and a lot of these publishing houses will try to take advantage of you so it always good to investigate what the expectations when creating a comic and what kind of budget that’s realistic for you to managed. Also, if you’re a writer and looking for an editor please research their background before asking them to review your series. An editor must be somewhat on the same wavelength as you and understand what type of story you’re trying to create. I had a situation where I rush to pick an editor and thought they would be a perfect fit because of their experience with previous indie comic creators. Only to realize it took them almost a month just to review my comic summary and proceeded to give me harsh criticism on why my story didn’t make sense and said it will never succeed.

I would also like to say is don’t be ashamed to take your time and find breaks whenever you need them. I know sometimes as a creator you want to get your story out there as soon as possible but I personally feel it’s better to have quality over quantity. You want to feel confident when releasing your series so it’s good to take your time and make sure your story make sense and have a cohesive flow when storytelling. The last thing you want to do is rush and try to put your story out there for the sake of just having it out there because at some point you will start to feel burnout and before you know it the whole passion to write or create is gone.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

Whenever I feel overwhelmed with my writing, I usually try to take a step back and avoid being in my head so much. One of the things I do to help with that is simply go outside, I know it sounds simple, but it’s the truth. When you’re at home you don’t realize how cramp you’re making your mentality feel. So, on certain occasions like the weekend I will go on dates with my girlfriend, go for a walk, do some photography on a trail, and lastly hangout with my friends. I can’t count how many times I did one of these activities and got inspiration for my writing. It also made me think in a better mindset such as saying “You know what? I don’t even know what I was stress about”.
