We recently connected with Ashley Dahline and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
While pursuing my undergraduate degree, I worked as a direct support professional. I took care of clients needs consisting of bathing, feeding, and medication. This only reinforced my passion for medicine and taking care of people. I shadowed multiple providers such as surgeons, family physicians, and physician assistants. I loved seeing how much time PA’s took with their patients and their empathy and understanding. After I finished my undergraduate degree, I took off for PA school in Wisconsin. I really enjoyed women’s health. Women’s health is often times under-researched with little resources. I felt like I could really make a difference to women being their own advocates in health care. Each situation and patient is unique, and I love being able to treat them as such. When I experienced my own issues with fertility, I developed more of an understanding and passion for helping women in similar situations. Every time I help a woman achieve a pregnancy, my cup fills. I couldn’t have found a better fit for me in women’s health and fertility.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I recently opened a practice to focus on treating women’s health conditions and fertility. I offer telehealth visits and consults to be respectful of patients time and money. I offer contraception management, hormone replacement therapy, weight loss medical management, annual examinations, acne treatment, acute care treatment, mental health, and of course fertility care. I hope to give patients the time and attention they deserve. There are too many women being rushed out the door at their visits due to time constraints. All of their needs are not being addressed.
I am currently cash based, but will be accepting insurance in the near future! Stay tuned!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In medicine, empathy is very important. Trying to understand what the patient is going through and how that affects their life, is very crucial to providing the best patient care. In medicine, you need medical knowledge. I have had 9 years of training and experience in women’s health and fertility. It takes time to learn and be successful in procedures and skills required for this job. I had another two years of acute care experience prior to this. Motivation was also a driving force to my journey. In medicine, you need to be motivated to keep up with research and constantly improving your skills. Medicine is always changing, and we need to stay motivated to change with it.
I would advise people wanting to develop these skills to find something they’re passionate about and the rest will come. If you love what you do, you will be motivated to keep learning and improving.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Honestly, just being supportive and always there to lean on when things got hard. I think growing up and picking a career, “young adults” are always worried they are going to disappoint people which most of the time comes down to their parents. This alone can force or have an impact on what young adults choose to do. They may not choose their true passion in fear of disappointing their loved ones. I have been able to change my course or take risks knowing I have the support of both of my parents. They may worry like most parents do, but I know they will support me and believe in me. I know I couldn’t have made it this far without either of them.
