We were lucky to catch up with Reinalis Ayala recently and have shared our conversation below.
Reinalis, so happy to have you with us today. You are such a creative person, but have you ever head any sort of creativity block along the way? If so, can you talk to us about how you overcame or beat it?
I think it’s very important to take breaks, ESPECIALLY from social media. As an entrepreneur, social media is a big part of marketing your brand but with such a big platform comes many different opinions and controversies. Not only can this affect your creativity but also your mental state. I find that taking a step back from everything can help you realign your truest desires and values, keeping you grounded. It genuinely frees up a space in your mind allowing new thoughts & ideas to flow freely.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Art is one of many ways I express myself. I like bringing it to life. Growing up a DIY kid, I was either drawing or creating new things. Being a Makeup Artist is exactly that for me. Painting a canvas— the canvas being their faces and having my clients fall in love with the results. I love being able to recreate the art they bring me and share the same happiness in the end. A bonus is meeting so many new and beautiful faces with such kind hearts behind them.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
That is such a great question. The most important quality when starting something new is giving yourself grace. Looking back I realize I was so hard on myself. I expected my work to look like the “professionals” so quickly and I’d constantly compare the two. Word of advice, comparison does more harm than good. Remember to be kind to yourself because after all it is a journey, not a race. Your only competition is you.
Be your biggest fan. When I first started as an MUA, I did not actually gain momentum until a year or two later. I expected my friends to support me in all the ways I would them in the beginning. Despite that, I did not give up or stop putting in my all. In fact it opened my eyes to the reality that strangers will become clients faster than any friend would. Yes! There are people still rooting for you even if you don’t feel, see, or hear it! If no one in the world believes in you, be the 1 that does.
Do it for you, not “them”. This might sound controversial being that you want a successful business and to appeal to the right audience but people love authenticity. No one wants to see and hear the same thing all the time. You need to be original and the only way you can is by being yourself. Do what you feel is right, what makes you happy, and not what is familiar. What’s “trending” wont grant you success. Create your own path and own it. Continue to stand in your power and those that are for you will gravitate toward you.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
God. Jesus Christ Himself. I noticed when I was trying to have full control of my business I wouldn’t get anywhere. There would be lack of motion for my page and I just couldn’t understand why. I got tired of trying to do it all myself so I gave it to him. This made me understand that the business isn’t even mine to control. It’s his. He gave it to me and he allows it to go as far as it’s going. Oftentimes we try to control a lot in our life when we actually just need to surrender. God will literally do the rest. There is no business, there is no life without Him.
