We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marisa Colon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marisa, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
To overcome burnout, I prioritize self-care and rejuvenation. Spending time alone helps me recharge and reconnect with myself, providing much-needed clarity and peace. I get regular massages to alleviate physical tension and promote relaxation. Listening to podcasts, especially those focused on mindfulness, self-improvement, or my interests, offers new perspectives and inspiration. By incorporating these activities into my routine, I manage stress effectively and regain my energy and enthusiasm.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am Marisa Colon, a passionate wedding photographer with experience capturing beautiful moments throughout the United States. What excites me most about wedding photography is the unique love stories I get to witness and document. Every wedding is a celebration of love and commitment, and I strive to capture the genuine emotions, candid moments, and intricate details that make each day special.
Through FBM Studios, I offer personalized services that ensure each couple’s vision is brought to life in a timeless and artistic manner. I believe that wedding photos should not only be beautiful but also tell a story that couples can cherish forever.
I’m thrilled to announce the release of my new book, [*Embrace the Emotion: A Soulful Bride’s Journal Leading to “I Do”*](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CVWX3XS5). This journal is designed to guide brides through their emotional journey leading up to their wedding day, offering reflections, prompts, and tips to help them embrace every moment of their special day. Additionally, I am excited to launch my photo booth business in Lakeland, Florida, and the surrounding areas, aiming to add an extra layer of fun and engagement to events, providing guests with memorable keepsakes.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey as a wedding photographer are creativity, empathy, and business acumen.
Creativity is essential in capturing unique and beautiful moments that stand out. I constantly seek inspiration from various sources and practice techniques to keep my work fresh and innovative. For those early in their journey, I recommend experimenting with different styles and finding what resonates with you. Take workshops, study the work of photographers you admire, and always push the boundaries of your artistic vision.
Empathy allows me to connect deeply with my clients, understanding their emotions and stories. This connection helps in capturing genuine moments that truly reflect their love and personalities. To develop this skill, focus on active listening and being fully present with your clients. Building strong relationships based on trust and understanding will naturally enhance the authenticity of your work.
Business acumen has been crucial in managing and growing my photography business. Understanding marketing, client management, and financial planning has enabled me to turn my passion into a sustainable career. For those starting, invest time in learning about the business side of photography. Take courses on marketing, network with other professionals, and seek mentorship from experienced business owners.
My advice for those early in their journey is to continuously learn and adapt. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and never stop honing your skills. Stay passionate about your craft, and remember that building a successful career is a marathon, not a sprint.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always open to partnering or collaborating with creative and passionate individuals. I am particularly interested in working with other photographers, wedding planners, florists, makeup artists, and vendors in the wedding industry who share a commitment to excellence and a love for capturing the beauty of special moments.
