We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amit Sharma a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Amit , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

At Nairu, we care deeply about the environment and the health of our customers so the creativity stems from our passion.
We select the finest natural waxes to infuse scents that are both unique and soothing, each candle is a product of meticulous care and passion.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am the owner and operational head of Nairu — A Candle Boutique, which is actually named after our children, combining parts of their names — Nai and Ru — to form “Nairu.” Nairu is the epitome of a family business. Our aim is to provide products that enhance the everyday living spaces of our customers, ensuring they have access to natural, healthy options that contribute to a pleasant and uplifting atmosphere in their homes. This commitment to natural and healthy living is deeply personal and reflected in every aspect of our business, inspired directly by the love and dedication I have for my family.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three qualities or skills that were most impactful in my journey with Nairu were resilience, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Resilience was crucial because starting a business is rarely a smooth ride. I faced many challenges, including lack of support from extended family and friends, and even hostility. There were financial struggles, shipment damages, and mistakes along the way. Yet, the ability to bounce back from these setbacks and continue moving forward was key to our success. My advice to others is to embrace challenges as learning opportunities.

Creativity played a vital role, especially coming from my background in the film and media industry. Creativity allowed us to differentiate our products and develop unique offerings like our signature blend of natural waxes and essential oils. For those starting out, I recommend fostering creativity by staying curious and open to new ideas. Surround yourself with diverse influences and don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Innovation often comes from unexpected places.

Lastly, an unwavering commitment to quality is something I can’t emphasize enough. Whether it’s ensuring our candles are made with natural, non-toxic ingredients or maintaining high standards in our yoga and wellness services, quality has been our cornerstone. To those at the beginning of their journey, I advise you to never compromise on quality. It’s what builds trust and loyalty with your customers. Invest time in research and development, and always seek to improve your offerings.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

Without question, I owe my success to my family — namely my wife and my children. Growing up in a challenging environment, where I was often called names by cousins and received little to no support from family, I learned the profound importance of creating a supportive home environment. My wife has been instrumental in this; she has managed our finances and home, allowing me to focus on the daily challenges of running Nairu. Her unyielding support has enabled us to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship together.
