We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I wrote in an earlier article that I wanted to take many different trainings to be more client centered instead of fearful and ego-centeric and hopefully do research, but I was thinking a lot about what I stand for. I discovered a deeper quest that I am on -that is not so cognitive. I have a deep commitment to living from the inside out and not the other way around. Finding self-worth has been my most special and important journey. I realized there is a part of all of us that is unbreakable. Trauma and stress can twist us and create defense mechanisms but there is a part of self -worth and that inner knowing is always there and that is where I draw my self worth from. It takes work to get there and listen and even change the things in your life that do not fit. I believe this now as like a conviction. I think many different theories have noticed this phenomenon. And seems to be called many different things.
But I believe it has always been there. I always ask myself “I am aligning with my purpose or am I afraid?” I try to no longer abandon myself which is easy to do in our complicated world. I love teaching this to clients.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
On a personal note, I had a vision one day after several near death experiences, to live, love, travel, and help people that have problems that are hard to treat by regular therapies. I left the corporate world determined to be a female entrepreneur in the industry of mental health that could excel at cutting edge technology but to advance organic wisdom . I was already a cutting edge trained therapists for over 30 years-I had worked at the Meadows where I learned from industry leaders and best selling authors such as Bessel van der Kolk, Patrick Carnes, Tian Dayton, Dick Schwartz, and Peter Levine that guided our work with people.
I formed and became the owner and CEO of NeurofeedbackAz which is a “Biofeedback and technology meets behavioral healthcare” company”. We take 2-D and 3-D maps of brain imaging of clients such as CEOs or athletes that want to work on Peak Performance and students who want to train attention span or even clients that want to explore treatment ideas for OCD, ADHD, Memory Disorders, Sleep, ODD, Autism, PTSD, TBI , Sensory Disorders and autoimmune disorders, and more. Science is allowing us to look at the organ we are treating “the brain” and get data and help clients reach their optimal functioning without invasive procedures or a regime of complex medications. Client can retrain their own brain wave activity. We also offer the most cutting edge therapies in the industry making us an industry leader several times over. We then offer neuro and biofeedback which is a way to help train brain functionality in ways that are enjoyable using games, focus techniques, and auxiliary virtual reality games and dimmer screens on your favorite shows that you bring in – to literally retrain stuck responses in the brain -the mapping is a formal assessment and a model of a real time brain wave activity that we build into a model and a handout and a report clients can take home. From the map-we design a training plan. Neurofeedback is not meant to replace other modalities like personal therapy but client love being able to track progress. Studies are mounting in terms of the efficacy of neurofeedback. Expect to see more technological solutions entering the behavioral health space. We are applying for grants as woman owned business and we are working on concepts to help use brain mapping for early detection of mental health or other illnesses such as Alzheimers-more to come on that front!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My deepest tool is humility. I have learned to know who to ask. I cant do it all. I have teams of mentors in different areas that I can reach out for guidance and support. I am humble and I will call someone and say “Help this is something new here can you give me your thoughts”! Having mentorship is key. To early learners. I would also say to get your heart and your vision straight-trying to be something just to make a quick buck or trying to take the easy way out will never make you the lighthouse that clients are drawn too. People also like when you are authentic. I tell clients when I make mistakes. I also run away from perfect people. There is always some ulterior motive. I gravitate toward coworkers and clients who are like “lets do this together” and “lets not always expect polished perfect people at every moment”.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We are really looking to partner with schools, organizations, treatment centers and investors as we are preparing to hit some monumental goals this year to create new protocols and add new devices and software to help clients. We would love to partner! We love coming out to speak, do retreats or coming to your organization for corporate retreats to work on leveling up. We also hope to work further on growing our services in the community and preventative testing for with maps (ADHD detection, Autism) and other mental health disorders this year.
