We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hannah Jaumot. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hannah below.
Hi Hannah, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Although experiencing burnout every so often like many artists, I allow myself to switch mediums whenever I feel burnt out with another. Embroidery is an incredibly time consuming skill, and often leads to mental and physical burnout. During the times when I need a break, I switch to other things I love to do like painting and pattern design. Then when I start to feel tired of those, I switch back to embroidery! As long as you stay creative, there is no reason to feel guilty about switching to a new project or learning a new medium to avoid burning out.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am an internationally recognized embroidery and pattern design artist, currently working on experimental usage of dried paint as a textile material. I no not limit myself to one specific medium and am also interested in makeup, nail, and fashion design. As well as being a commissioned artist, I am selling custom press on nails based on my artwork!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As an artist, keeping an avid sketchbook is very important. Same for creating thumbnails and mockups of new projects, dreaded words for many art students. Sketching new ideas and giving yourself options before starting a project will help you create the best outcome. Keeping your old sketchbooks and thumbnails is also key, you might revisit them later on! Lastly, being open to learn new mediums and techniques will do nothing but help you in the long run, even if you think it has nothing to do with what you really want to study!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am open to any and all types of collaborations. I love to work with different artist and see all the different perspectives they bring to the world. I would especially love to collaborate with someone in the fashion world who is interested in integrating manipulated paint into one of a kind runway looks.
