Meet Sharmeen Moinuddin

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sharmeen Moinuddin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Sharmeen, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I was 13 years old when I picked up a henna cone and drew my first henna design. I remember the positive response I received from everyone around me. I saw the faith that my family and friends had in my skills which instilled faith in me of my own capabilities. This played a big role in propelling me forward in my henna journey. I stayed consistent and continued to give time to my art over the years and this dedication led me to grow into the artist you see today. I am proud of the progress I have made since I started. I learned how to make my own henna paste. Also, my work has gotten cleaner, my hands steadier, my pace faster, and my designs better. What started out as a hobby turned into a business and I can earn money doing something I love which ultimately was a huge boost to my confidence and self esteem!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am a self taught professional henna artist originally from Chicago, Illinois but currently residing in Las Vegas, Nevada. Henna art is a form of temporary body art that originates from a henna plant whose leaves contain a dye that has staining abilities. It is most often applied during celebrations such as weddings and holidays. I mix my own natural henna paste and when applied to the skin the paste leaves a reddish brown stain which can last on the skin for up to two weeks. I’ve done henna in a variety of settings ranging from large parties in which I create simple, free-style designs to bridal sessions in which I carefully craft elaborate designs for brides. Although I do henna for a wide range of occasions, I am mostly recognized for my bridal work which I have completed for hundreds of clients. These sessions require steady focus and can take up to 3 to 8 hours depending on the amount of coverage and level of detail requested by the bride. Something I find beautiful about my craft is its calming effect. I find myself in a state of zen when I’m creating, which can make hours feel like minutes. I also love that it’s allowed me to connect with so many amazing people. Henna application is an intimate process and often times you’re in close proximity with strangers which has allowed me to appreciate human differences.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I believe having passion in what you do is so critical to your growth in your journey. Before I started henna, I loved all things art. I loved to create and this passion I had for art is what lead me to fall in love with henna! My love for henna and art also motivated me to stay consistent which leads me to my second quality: consistency. Practice makes progress and I believe this is especially true when it comes to henna. When I was starting out as a henna artist, I would create henna patterns on anyone I could get my hands on. When I wasn’t creating with a henna cone, I would be doodling designs on paper with a pen. I believe staying consistent allowed me to excel in my craft! Lastly, I believe it is important to have humility. If you think you’re already the best then that leaves little room for improvement which prevents you from getting better!

How would you describe your ideal client?

An ideal client for me is someone who has respect for the art and the artist. I appreciate clients who appreciate me. Henna application is a very time consuming and physically demanding process and having a client that follows the directions makes the application process a whole lot easier for the client and the artist. Before the application, an ideal client has communicated with the artist what they would like and gives the artist creative liberties as well. During the application, an ideal client has created a calm, bright work environment for the artist and stays still while the henna is being applied. After the application, an ideal client takes care of the henna by following the aftercare instructions given to them so that the stain comes out dark and long lasting!
