Meet Anduriel Widmark

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Anduriel Widmark. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Anduriel, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

My resilience is deeply intertwined with my artistic practice, which continually teaches me the value of adaptability and optimism. As an artist, every new project is an unpredictable, unknown space, and the creative process often requires a reevaluation of both concepts and methods. This ongoing need for adaptation can be challenging and encourages mental flexibility. Facing and embracing these challenges fuels my optimism, as each piece brings new insights along with the excitement of creation.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

As an artist, I explore and celebrate the patterns that make up our world through various mediums, primarily focusing on glass sculptures and oil paintings. My work embodies abstract geometric designs with vibrant shapes and intertwined lines. My practice has developed from the joy of creation, I am often turning mathematical theories into tangible, aesthetic experiences. This process combines sometimes dissimilar ways of thinking, making art an exciting, never-ending creative journey of discovery.

One of the main projects I’ve focused on involves creating glass sculptures based on symmetric hexastix and rod packings, which dive into an intricate dance of geometry, topology, and art. These sculptures, alongside my scholarly papers on the subject, are part of a larger project to make mathematical concepts accessible and engaging through art. This work helps bridge the gap between academic research and artistic practice. This year, I was thrilled to see my explorations in art and mathematics culminate in the publication of my new book, ‘Polystix Adventures.’ Now available for purchase, this book invites readers to dive into the captivating world of geometric art and glass sculpture.

Another way I have been recently expanding my artistic practice and keeping things fresh, is through collaboration with my partner Reece. She is an amazing artist and working together over the past year has pushed both of our work into some really fun, interesting, and unexpected directions. Some of our collaborative works are produced under the name Tandem Tangents, and we have focused on digital, video, print magazines, and a slew of other projects. I am excited to see where we go next.

Somehow, through all the exhibitions, paintings, sculptures, publications, and collaborations, I keep discovering surprising relationships and new passageways. By sharing my work, I hope to build on these connections and help celebrate how amazing it is that any of us are experiencing any of this at all.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Reflecting on my journey, three qualities that stand out as particularly influential for me have been adaptability, curiosity, and persistence. Adaptability has allowed me to embrace and integrate new ideas and technologies into my work, keeping it fresh and vibrant. Curiosity has been the fuel for my explorations, driving the innovative use of new patterns and symmetrical possibilities seen in my sculptures and paintings. Finally, persistence keeps me going through challenging projects, especially when translating complex mathematical concepts into tangible art forms.

For those starting their journey, my advice is to cultivate these traits constantly. Embrace change and challenges as opportunities to grow, and remain curious about everything around you. These qualities will not only develop your craft but also enrich your personal growth and resilience in facing any task.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

Over the past year, my most significant area of growth has been embracing new ways of understanding the world. The rapid changes of the past decade are undeniable, and the volume from the overarching oppressive systems can seem insurmountable. I am trying to stay oriented during these shifts, constantly learning from perspectives outside myself. This year has been another heavy round of rediscovering histories and recontextualizing what I thought I knew, helping me to see the larger cycles and patterns that connect us. Witnessing the courage, grace, and kindness that others bring to these big challenges inspires me deeply. I don’t know what the future holds, but I am learning to adapt and find balance, trying to prepare for whatever comes next.
