We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khushi Jamnadas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Khushi with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I believe that my work ethic is a result from seeing a part of my life that lacks something that I desire. For almost my entire life, I have been extremely goal driven – while I enjoy celebrating the small successes that I encounter in my life, I do not let that slow me down in the process of achieving the bigger picture. This was a common practice in middle and high school, where I studied very hard to get good grades on my tests; however, I would not let one good grade allow me to slack off, because I knew that the end goal was to achieve a high grade in the course and ultimately boost my GPA to get into a good school. Now being a college student, I have prioritized making connections with individuals who are in the industry I want to be in, and live in NYC, which is my dream city. With my photography account, I have tried to be consistent with posting new content as often as I can, and trying to connect with people who have been successful in this field so that I can grow my account and gain a higher following.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am currently a college student at the University of South Florida double majoring in Finance and Econometrics, and currently reside in Tampa, Florida. However, my journey with my photography account and brand, Photos by Khushi, began in my freshman year of high school when I lived in Toronto, Canada. I began to have a greater appreciation for the beauty around me, and the small pockets of peace and happiness in my life when I entered high school, as I had become significantly more busy, One of the few “free” moments that I had was on my 20 minute morning walks to school with my two friends, where we passed by a small pond in front of our neighbourhood, overlooking a gorgeous sunrise. I would capture a picture of the sunrise almost every morning, and my friends would jokingly ask me why I took a picture of “the same thing” everyday, well, that was the thing – it actually wasn’t the “same thing” everyday, Every picture I got was of a moment in time that was completely unique from the others, one that I would never experience again no matter how hard I tried to replicate it. The sunrise itself looked different, and so were the memories associated with it. This was when I started to take pictures more often – of the countryside when we went on long drives in the greater Toronto area, of the forests and likes on our hikes, of the falls in Niagara Falls, and of my friends. I established my brand through Instagram to showcase my story through the places that I loved, cared for, and represented a section of my life. When I moved to Tampa a year ago with my family, I started getting more pictures of the local area and cities, to showcase the parts of Tampa I loved and missed the most about my home in Toronto. Now being a college student, my focus has been on landing a career in finance in NYC; nevertheless, I want to continue to to start positing more frequently on my account as I hope to pursue travel photography or filmmaking after being in the finance industry. With my involvement in my university’s fashion club, I hope to get more involved in putting out fashion photography content!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back on my journey, the first quality that I have developed is adaptability. Moving countries and starting college immediately was extremely difficult, which had motivated me to find new ways to adapt to my environment and adjust to changes in my lifestyle and the people that I interacted with. Seeing this, I have also become a lot more outgoing and bold, as I joined several organizations at my school, both with career and artistic focuses, to build a group of friends, as well as connections that will help me pursue my goals and dreams. I also learned the importance of being persistent and hardworking, even when you may feel drained or tired, because at the end of the day, the outcome will be extremely rewarding, For those who are embarking upon their journey in a new segment of life, whether in a new career, school, or place, try to surround yourself with people who are driven and have similar goal dot yourself, as it will keep you motivated to work hard in pursuing your own goals. And most importantly, be consistent – just because one way of doing something does not work, try something else! A lot of the time, it is just a matter of changing your perspective.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
At the moment, my content is mostly focussed around city and nature photography, which has been incredible and a great way for me to showcase my passion and dream of living in a large city. With joining the fashion club at my school, Kouture, I was reunited with my love for fashion and apparel, which has always been a favourite form of expressing my moods and personality. I hope that going forward, I can work with more local models and fashion photographers in doing themed fashion photoshoots with creatives both in and outside of the Kouture club!
