We recently connected with Christen Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Christen, thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?
In early 2019 I was fired from my Full Time job at a magazine company. My 3 year work anniversary was right around the corner and I was very adamant about being given so many high responsibilities without compensation. I could tell they didn’t want to budge so i prepared myself accordingly but still knew my worth and what i brought to the company. I was let go a few weeks before my 3rd year and I was at peace with the outcome because I know being taken advantage of is not something im willing to allow any longer. My job as the Lead Designer was fun and relaxing but sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture and not settle. The pandemic happened shortly after and I was able to start working from home as a freelance designer. I’m thankful to this day, bc knowing my worth opened a new door for me.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As a designer I move around in alot of different creative areas. Working on client work is fun but it can very well be stressful and trying at times, my outlet is designing work meant to inspire and uplift. I’ve recently been involved with art pop ups and signing up for vendor spots to spread my work. I truly believe this fall is going to be worth the wait. I’ve used the beginning of the year to see how things work and to get the flow of things. I am interested in traveling to see and enter new pop ups as this has been a very rewarding way to meet new friends. I always show a behind the scenes on IG: themoodydesk as this is the page for my personal fun projects. The stickers, magnets, prints along with everything else is meant for a good time and a positive time. I want to bring out the good in the world and let people know that kindness is still alive. It really is the small things.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I can not stress this enough. SPEAK UP. You have to be vocal and firm when you know you deserve or have earned something. Be respectful but speak up because I can guarantee that someone else will and you will regret not standing up for yourself. You can miss out on a lot of opportunities just by having a closed mouth. Don’t let your moment pass you by all because you wouldn’t stand up and speak up.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for that perfect fit to do a collaboration. I am open to anyone interested to see if we can work together. At the moment I would really like to connect with a store or cafe and see if we can get stickers or prints in each customers bag. Imagine you checking out and when you sit down to eat or open your new shirt, there is a nice colorful print or sticker reminding you how fantastic you are! This is what brings me joy! I welcome all who want to collab, this is just a lil dream of mine.
