Meet Dr. Kelvin Jones

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dr. Kelvin Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Dr. Kelvin, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

My resilience comes from a long line of fighters in my family that have refused to say no. My father dropped out of school and joined the Marines to provide for me, my mother worked 3 jobs to be sure I was taken care of. My grandparents grew up in a Jim Crow South where they weren’t allowed a ton of privileges as African Americans in the Deep South and instilled in me a refusal to lose or be denied.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a real estate investor focusing on value add properties that help revitalize communities. I was formerly a Grammy-nominated musician and educator in K-12 and university levels in the Southern parts of the US.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

People skills, tenacity, and a “can-do” attitude

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

They had a “can do” mentality. My mother had me as a sophomore in college and worked numerous jobs to make sure I was always provided for. My father dropped out of college and joined the Marines to be sure he provided for me as well. There was never a moment of a situation coming up throughout my life that either them or another family member didn’t find a way to make it happen from school field trips, experiences, musical instruments, etc. They always made sure I was loved and cared for to be able to accomplish whatever I had my mind set to.
