Meet Denise Washington

We recently connected with Denise Washington and have shared our conversation below.

Denise, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I bee\live I was just born resilient! For as long as I an remember I have always had a very determined mind set to do things on my own and not be 100% dependent upon others. To a lot it may look like stubbornness and in a way it may be, but in order to achieve any goal you must have some level of resilience to accomplish your goal. Life is full of challenges and you have to decide if those challenges are going to stop you or make you stronger.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am originally from Kansas City, KS and the mother of 5 young adults and the grandmother of 7. My entry into motherhood started my journey into the birth worker world. The very first thing i noticed was there wasn’t many in this field that looked like me or received support. I founded my non-profit in 2018 as a platform to help provide maternity care for people of color and create a safe space for other birth workers to learn and train with someone who looks like them,

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Taking business and entrepreneurship classes in high school, learn from more than once source, and treating people the way you want to be treated.

Stay open minded on your journey, it is never a straight line, celebrate every win, take breaks when needed, and never compare your journey with anyone else.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

The biggest challenge right now is finding a way to serve those who can’t pay without taking a loss. Currently in the process of restructuring our business and strategic plan.
