Meet Laura Gabriela

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Gabriela. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Laura, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

Since I was little, seeing my Mum, originally from Brazil, get through life in another country and make a life for herself and her family always inspired me. I have always been so set on my goals and had the same goals since I was young that resilience came at as a second nature to me. Whether that is spending every hour I can to work on my music, living in a different country on my own at 18 and create a new life with new friends and without my family. My mentality has always been set on moving towards my goals.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Before I loved singing, I loved music. I loved the effect it has on people and the way it made me feel, whether it was sadness, happiness or nostalgia. The way music transports people to a different place and how one song can have a different effect to anyone who listens to it is beautiful. Compared to a two hour movie or any other media, the ability to tell a full story and share my emotions in a few minutes is really challenging but so rewarding.
A lot of my songs are about my relationships and obviously everyone experiences different types of relationships everyday. Talking about my own experiences in my songs and seeing how people can feel similar about their own experiences makes the journey so valuable. Being an artist is so special cause I love connecting with people and sharing emotions in a thoughtful way.
Since the past two years, I have been working on an album with my friend and producer Danny Scheer. The album is about overcoming a breakup and moving to London by myself but in an uplifting way, in most songs, with catchy melodies and lively beats. My music is pop oriented and transitions between ballads and upbeat tracks.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I think one of the qualities that is the more important in my journey as an artist is resilience. In the music industry, any artist is going to face a lot (really a lot) of rejection. And to be totally honest it is super hard to have people saying that they don’t believe in what you do or that your music is “just not there yet” and that is why resilience is THE main thing that keeps you going when facing rejection. Surrounding yourself with good friends, your family and a team is very important to get the motivation to keep pushing when things get hard.

Authenticity is also one of the qualities which I think is crucial in this journey. To be able to make listeners connect with me I need to make music I like and keep being true to myself. I have been told many times by producers, music teachers or people in the industry that to make it I need to make music that matches the trends, change genres or sing in a different way. Obviously, I am still at the very beginning of my journey but have been seeing so many artists listen to these advices and ended up making music they didn’t like and be unhappy in the industry. I also do believe that being authentic will attract people who believe in you and appreciate you for your true self.

We all know that a working hard mentality is always one of the big qualities everyone should have to succeed in any industry. Particularly in the music industry, where it is very competitive, hard work and dedication to your art with clear goals and plans is the key to attract luck and success.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Absolutely! I am always looking for people to collaborate with. Working with other people is always super fun and I love how it always opens doors for new perspectives and new ideas that I would’ve never thought about by myself. I really appreciate people who can be versatile and get out of their comfort zones just like I do when working with new producers or songwriters. It is so interesting and kinda magical to work in a team and have a few people who come from complete different music backgrounds collaborate and make a song.
