Meet Shaquandra Tyler

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shaquandra Tyler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Shaquandra , thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?

I have literally always been a risk taker. I have never been afraid to start over, especially when I see that something isn’t going to work out. I always learn from my mistakes and know what not to do the next time around. I also plan things ahead of time to make sure that I am always prepared.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a full time nail tech. I got into nails at the beginning of my senior year of college. I never thought that this would be the career for me but I knew once I started that it was the one! I always thought that I would play professional basketball, but I had a career ending injury that deterred me from that dream so like always, I had to figure something else out. College was always in the plans for me and I knew that physical therapy, training, and the medical field would always be the route that I would take. In 2020, of course covid changed the world and it made me figure some other things out with life as well. When covid came around, my hours at my job got cut tremendously so I knew that I had to come up with another plan. At this point, I loved self care. I always had my nails, hair, and lashes done. It made me think to myself that I could make money around campus doing the same things. I started to do nails out of my apartment and business started to boom. I loved making the girls feel good about themselves and it drove me to stick to doing it. Now here we are, four years later. I am now licensed and running my business full time.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were resilience, curiosity, and being able to adapt. The advice that I have for people that are early on in their journey is to never give up! The road won’t always be easy, because if it was, everyone would be able to do it. Fight for what you want in life and stick with it.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My clients definitely play a big part in who I am. My clients are honest and when I ask them for feedback, they aren’t afraid to be honest with me. This helps me to improve my craft because It lets me know what I need to work more towards.
