Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shelby Morford. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Shelby , thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
Self-discipline isn’t something that one person just has, it’s developed over years. I believe the foundation for self-discipline was taught to me as a kiddo – It takes consistency and hard work to achieve your desired outcome, you can’t rely on motivation alone, because at some point that will fail you, and no one can do it for you. It’s doing the hard things when you don’t want to. It’s saying no to the “drinks”, to the parties, or staying out late. Yes, it was hard but with every step I took it became easier to say no to the things that weren’t conducive to the type of person I was striving to become.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m focused on building my business, SM Homegrown. I could talk about how important strength training and nutrition is ALL DAY. These two topics bring me so much joy and gives me purpose. For me, I have gained so much knowledge and I want to share that with you to bring the wellness you deserve in your life.
Let me start with personal training, I’ve been chasing my certification for about 10 years and I finally took those steps and I’m so happy I did! It’s so much more than packing on muscle and hitting PR’s. It’s about decreasing risk for disease, striving for optimal body function, and improving muscle strength.
Nutrition is an absolute game-changer, but it’s not all about macros (yes, they play a pretty big part). We look at at the reason why you are eating. Is it because you are actually hungry? Is there something in your environment that cued you to eat? Did you feel an emotion and turned to food for comfort? This is just the brink of the type of things we look at. We build desirable habits through obtainable actions week after week.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Hard work: There is nothing easy about changing the lifestyle you currently have. Going through these two processes is not fast and takes patience. In the beginning, I had to make it related to life so others could understand. This is not an instance where you can fall in love with the outcome – you have to fall in love with the process. What I mean by that is in any relationship you have to show up, work hard, and be consistent to have a happy and successful relationship. It’s the same thing with this process of change – you have to show up, work hard, and be consistent so you end up with the outcome you long for.
Creating a routine of non-negotiables: This can be especially hard. It comes with saying no a lot and disregarding peer pressure. A complete change of routine all at once is tough, so I suggest to my clients the best way to do this is tell your support system and friends that you are doing “X” things on certain days of the week. They may be more likely to hold you accountable or even join in!
Learning corrective exercise: I began by lifting to hit PR’s and building muscle. However, as I age I’ve realized it’s not all about that, is that you too? There comes a time when you might be set back because of injury and realize it was the way you were lifting. My advice to you is – drop the ego and drop the weight to focus on your form. Weight will come back, but if you don’t fix the problem you’ll be right back where you were.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I hit the gym. It helps me get out any emotions so I can get my mind right. It doesn’t fix the problem at hand, but gets me out of the situation so I can look at it with more clarity. If I don’t have the ability to go to the gym, I use at least one of my six stress – reducing exercises to calm my mind and body to get back to homeostasis. I don’t like to make decisions in a situation where I’m stressed if I don’t have to.
