We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Crista Ekstrand a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Crista , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Discovering my purpose through photography was a gradual realization that culminated when I began focusing on portrait photography. Coming from a background in psychology with a bachelor’s degree and experience in counseling, I’ve always been passionate about helping others recognize their inherent beauty and strengths.
When I started doing portrait sessions, I witnessed a profound transformation in people. It was incredibly rewarding to see how my photography could empower them and boost their confidence. The moment when clients would light up after seeing their portraits was truly gratifying. It reminded me of the satisfaction I felt in counseling when clients had breakthrough moments and gained new perspectives on themselves.
This parallel between counseling and photography became clear to me – both professions allow me to connect with people on a deep level and help them appreciate their own unique beauty and worth. Through photography, I can capture not just what people look like, but also their essence and personality. It’s a way for me to continue my passion for empowering others, albeit in a different form.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a wedding photographer who thrives on transforming moments into timeless art with you as my inspiration. For me, capturing weddings is a privilege and a passion—I get to document couples on one of the most significant days of their lives, preserving those cherished moments for eternity. Every couple I work with holds a special place in my heart, and I approach each wedding with dedication and reverence.
What makes this work truly exceptional to me is the profound significance of the occasion. To be entrusted with capturing the essence of their love and the beauty of their day is incredibly rewarding. My aim is not just to deliver stunning photographs but also to create a warm, memorable experience. I bring positive energy, gentle guidance, and a genuine connection to every session.
My photography is not just about poses; it’s about capturing authentic moments and emotions. I believe in building a personal connection with my clients—I don’t see myself as a vendor but as a friend and a cheerleader for your special day. I am passionate about combining my love for photography with my appreciation for people, ensuring that each image tells a unique and heartfelt story.
In essence, my unconventional approach to wedding photography is all about capturing genuine connections and creating lasting memories. I am here to celebrate your love and document your story with sincerity and artistry.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In reflecting on my journey, three key factors have significantly shaped my growth:
During college, I enrolled in photography classes that greatly expanded my technical knowledge and artistic perspective. These courses provided a structured learning environment that complemented my self-taught skills. They were instrumental in refining my craft and exposing me to different photographic styles and techniques. For those starting out, I highly recommend seeking formal education or workshops in your area of interest. Formal training not only enhances your skills but also provides invaluable mentorship and networking opportunities. Remember, practice is key—apply what you learn by shooting as frequently as possible and getting comfortable in front of both people and the camera.
My background in Psychology has been crucial in my photography career. Understanding human behavior and emotions has allowed me to create a comfortable and trusting environment during photoshoots. This skill enhances the quality of my work and fosters strong client relationships. Early in your journey, focus on developing interpersonal skills and understanding human psychology. This understanding will enable you to connect more deeply with clients and subjects, whether you’re in a creative field like photography or any client-facing role. The more shoots you do, the more you’ll refine your ability to make people feel comfortable and at ease.
Working in a photography studio exposed me to the business side of the industry. I gained practical experience in client management, project coordination, budgeting, and marketing. These skills are essential for running a successful photography business. Gain exposure to the business aspects of your field early on. Internships or jobs in relevant environments can provide invaluable insights and prepare you to navigate challenges as you advance in your career. Don’t hesitate to get hands-on experience—each shoot and client interaction will contribute to your growth and confidence as a professional.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My husband, Sheldon, has been my greatest support system, transforming me into the confident woman I am today, both in life and in my business. With his extensive background in sales, he’s been instrumental in guiding the business side of things. But beyond his professional expertise, it’s his unwavering love and the sense of security he provides that have truly empowered me. His encouragement and belief in me have made my confidence soar. Whenever I face self-doubt or imposter syndrome, Sheldon is right there, lifting me up with his boundless love and support, making me believe that I can conquer any challenge.
