Meet Paul-Lou Lemieux

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Paul-Lou Lemieux. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Paul-Lou below.

Hi Paul-Lou, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.

First of all, I am not the most optimistic person in the world. And most of the time, I tend to see more the negative side of things than positive ones. It’s just my nature. I guess I do that as a protection. But I learned how to see the bright side of things instead of getting stuck in the darkness without being able getting out of it.

To try to see it differently, there is always this saying that comes to mind; the grass is always greener on the other side. Relativizes.

I am, and you are also going through life with ups and downs all the time. That’s the game, that’s life – it’s a roller coaster. And I realised a lot of times that staying in this negative mind would not make me happy at all and get me stuck in my problems where solutions are right next to me – in my brain.

It’s always easier to say than to do. And I understand that it’s not easy to see the positive aspect of being in a car crash or when you get out of a divorce. But believe me, it makes it way more easier when you stop thinking about it and force yourself to see what it can bring you positively instead of what it has took from you.

Think about the future, about how you want to treat yourself. It’s about being well in your skin that matters.
When something happens in your life, it may be the right time to refocus and get back on your feet.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a film producer, I focus on producing audiovisual content.
It goes from film fiction (short & feature), music videos, documentaries to commercials.
I’ve mostly focus on the artistic side of each projects, on what the story tells and choosing the right technical choices.

For me, producing is focusing on both artistic and technical side of each films. On how, and what are the best options to bring an idea, a story, an artist or a product to it’s pic. It’s always good to fix a goal and to know what you are making and where you are bringing your film. Finding the right balance.

After 3 years of studies in a film school in France, I worked for the Cannes Film Festival for the 72nd edition before getting into production. I then moved to New-York and now running my production company : Insouciant Films, for more than a year.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Patient – I have been so impatient in my life, and I think I still am sometimes. But know something – it’s useless to run faster in your head than how it is going in life. Sometimes, you’ll go faster – and deeper, by doing things in it’s rythme and in it’s time rather than if you’d speed up the process. What is important is not the destination – but the journey to get there.

Attentive & Introspective – Be attentive to what people say, to what people do, to what is happening around you, and ask yourself the right questions. You’ll win a lot of time, and learn a lot about yourself by paying attention to those small details. There are clues in every words and actions.

Confident – I’m not always confident, but being confident is also accepting sometimes not to know where to go. In that case, I always know how to reassure myself and to stay in the line. I know where I go, what I want and why I’m going for.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

Being themselves.

We tend to think that certain things are not right to do, or that people should educate their children in a certain way or in another. But I think that we mostly follow our parents road, and at the end – we are mostly being inspired by them in the way they are rather than how they treated us. It goes hand in hand.

Whenever I understood that – I promised myself to be good with myself before having kids.
