We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Seun Bewaji . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Seun below.
Hi Seun, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
I’ve missed out on so many opportunities in the past when it came to maintaining relationships, jobs, etc. I was too comfortable in my own skin. I wanted to play it safe. I was scared. I had all of those “what if” thoughts in my head. I thought, “What if people judge me?” “What if I fail?” Within a matter of time, I had to put those thoughts to rest because I realized it was only hurting me, not helping me. So I started doing things I was afraid of. I learned how to drive. Within a few years, I got my drivers license. I started going to networking events to meet up with directors, actors, producers. I started sending emails everyday to directors to get an audition to act in movies, TV, and Theatre. Anytime I had those thoughts, I told myself, If I don’t go for what I want, I’ll never have it! That’s the reality I had to face. Tomorrow is never promised. I would never want to be on my death bed filled with regrets. It’s better to start following your dreams now. Or else one day it’ll be too late. Life is too precious to let your dreams pass you by..
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an actor. I acted in some short films. Also. I have participated in theatre. I’ve taken some acting classes. I even made my own short films. I participated in The 48 Hour Film Project. The project is about assembling a team together to work on a short film together within 48 hours. I had so much fun working with this team. It has actually taught me how to become a better actor. I gained so many connections with those that are in the same field as me. Nothing feels better than meeting people that have the same aspirations as you do. You can take so much insight from them. Who knows where that can take someone. That’s why networking is really important when you want to start your career. You can learn a thing or two from someone. You never know, you may get to meet celebrities. There’ was just so much room for me to grow not only as an actor, but as an individual to gain great communication skills. Without communication, there is no room to grow your business, to start a career, I had to learn you just can’t do it all on your own, (as much as I hate to use the word, “I can’t.”) It holds so much negativity. But that statement is true. You need great communication skills. Nobody ever just became successful overnight to themselves. They had a team they could network with. My friend would tell me, If you want to go fast, you go alone. If you want to go far, you go together.” Right there, that speaks volumes. Yes. It’s good to be independent and stay on the top of your feet. But when you’re working as a team, more opportunities will come your way.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Listening to others opinions, Gathering their thoughts, taking notes. My advice to anyone that wants to start their career on a good note is to NETWORK. NETWORK. NETWORK. Take classes, join clubs. Volunteer. To always remember that comfort isn’t your best friend. You need to get out of your comfort zone if you want to make some changes. Another thing is patience. I can’t stress enough that being patient will do you so much wonders.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Meditate. It calms my mind and spirit. I tell myself that everything is going to be ok. I have faith that everything will be ok, without faith, you’re just stuck in this bubble. There’s no way through. You have to believe in yourself that you will succeed. Even if you fail, at least you did your best. Not doing anything is just a waste of your time. Start off small and just take it one day at a time and you’ll get there. Don’t worry so much about the destination, instead be present and focus on the journey.
